✅ Ensure they always have access to a shaded spot, indoors and out, with fresh cool water topped up throughout the day.

✅ Cooling mats and jackets are a simple and affordable way to help on hotter days. Avoid prolonged use though, as overexposure can cause your dog's temperature to drop too low. A cold damp towel works well too — just don't cover them with it, as this creates a sauna effect.

✅ Most dogs love water, making paddling pools, rivers, and garden sprinklers a brilliant way to keep them cool and hydrated at the same time. Ensure they don't drink salt water at the beach, or too much water! Avoid standing water like horse troughs, and keep them out of rivers or ponds if you spot any blue-green algae — it can be toxic.

✅ Raw food contains significantly more moisture than a dry diet, supporting hydration from the inside. Serving it cold from the fridge gives your dog an extra cooling boost, and bone broth or watermelon served cold or frozen are excellent natural sources of electrolytes.

✅ For dogs with longer or thicker coats, a summer trim can make a real difference. If you'd rather keep the length, regular brushing to remove excess hair works just as well.

Carbs are one of the most debated topics in canine nutrition — so we asked Dr. Nick Thompson to settle it. 🐾

Dogs have no scientifically documented requirement for carbohydrates.

And here’s the biological reason why: dogs don’t produce salivary amylase (the enzyme needed to break down carbs).

It’s Mother Nature’s way of telling us something: starch-heavy grain fillers don’t belong in your dog’s bowl.

It’s always worth asking what’s actually in your dog’s bowl and why it’s there.

Try this frozen treat:

1️⃣ Core a bell pepper to make a safe, edible “bowl”
2️⃣ Load it with fresh antioxidants (blueberries & strawberries).
3️⃣ Add a high-value single protein treat as an extra reward
4️⃣ Pour in the bone broth and add a carrot stick
5️⃣ Freeze overnight

This takes only 5 minutes to prep and delivers the perfect high-value reward while cooling them down in the summer heat☀️

Did you know that a dog who seems stubborn or distracted might simply be mentally fatigued or under-fuelled?

When a dog can’t process commands clearly, there can be many contributing factors - from sleep and stress levels to nutrition and reward value.

UsIf by high-value rewards alongside proper nutrition can make a real difference:
👉 They create positive associations that make learning genuinely enjoyable
👉 They create positive associations that make learnings genuinely enjoyable
👉 They make you, the handler, the more valuable to your dog than any scent or distraction around them

Well-rounded training takes into account what’s happening on the inside too 🧬

It never hurts to be reminded that not all human foods are safe for dogs. While many fresh foods can be a healthy addition to their diet, some should never be shared.

❌ Macadamia nuts – Even small amounts can be toxic to dogs, causing weakness, tremors, vomiting and lethargy.
❌ Chocolate – Contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs cannot metabolise effectively. Even small amounts can make them seriously ill.
❌ Onions – Whether raw, cooked or powdered, onions can damage red blood cells and may lead to anaemia.

If you’re ever unsure whether a food is safe to share, it’s always best to check first.

You dog’s rest is just as vital as serious nutrition, supporting their cognitive health and long-term longevity by allowing their body to repair and process the day.

Providing a quiet, dedicated space for them to decompress is a simple way to support their natural biology. When we prioritise high-quality rest alongside a species-appropriate diet, we’re helping them find a natural “off switch”.

Less processed is better. Raw takes that as far as it can go 🐾

Dogs are biologically built to digest raw meat, bone and offal. That hasn’t changed in tens of thousands of years.

And when food is blast-frozen immediately after production, every nutrient is locked in exactly as nature intended — unlike gently cooked food, which can lose heat-sensitive nutrients in the process.

Gently cooked is a step in the right direction. Raw is as far as you can take it.
