Virginia Cheeseman Now retired (October 2025), I was the original 'Bug Lady', breeding and supplying many types of creepy crawly pets for over 40 years. (my USP? I do not lie!)

I am the original 'Bug Lady', breeding and supplying many types of creepy crawly pets. My little home business has now been going for over 30 years, in the last couple of years I have found myself being called the ‘Spider Lady’ more often than not. Trends are continually changing and arachnids are far more popular than they have ever been before. I have a bug room at the side of our house that is

dedicated to keeping a multitude of creatures. Since moving out of London in 2003, my work is mainly postal but I do welcome visitors by appointment. It took me some time to actually reach the 21st century and see the potential of customers ordering online. I am now fully convinced, business has increased tremendously since setting up my first online store in 2009. In October 2012 my current online store went live, the photographs are larger and clearer, the information is more comprehensive and the online ordering is simpler and therefore easier to use. I am still readily accessible by email and telephone and I strive to maintain my position as the most friendly and reliable bug supplier!

Honestly, this is ridiculous! No joking now, I went out in my back garden the other evening and there were giant slugs everywhere, I actually filled this bucket up. They have eaten almost all the plants that I lovingly grew in my greenhouse 😡

I left the humongous Leopard slugs as I thought they ate other slugs but having read up on them, I reckon they are just as bad for my poor garden.

The only good thing about this mammoth slug hunt is that I found another beautiful male Stag beetle 🥰

If I see baby hedgehogs on my night time wildlife camera, it will all be worth it.

Great excitement yesterday afternoon 😁

The amazing caterpillar that I found on our drive in October, had finally hatched into the most perfect moth. I read up on Convolvulous hawk moths and found that they probably couldn’t survive our winter so I had to take care of her. I put her in the loft to overwinter and checked on her weekly. I didn’t want her to get too dry or too damp and I was worried that she might get too cold so I monitored the temperature. Well, it was worth all the effort when she hatched out in my greenhouse. The only disappointing thing was that Milo missed it 🙁 We checked on her in the morning and then I checked again after I took Milo home. I didn’t want to hold onto her so I put her on a tree in the garden where she was very well camouflaged.

How likely is it that she will find a mate? Not very likely but I did my best.

My garden is full of slugs and snails 😱

I can’t use any pellets because of our hedgehogs. I have been reading up on the Giant Spanish slug invasion! I read a very interesting article from Denmark, it says the only way to deal with them is to collect them all up. So I have been trying for the last couple of weeks but after the last few days of rain, there are literally hundreds of them. Every day I am collecting them up in my plastic bucket, the article says that they need to be cleared before August, when they start laying eggs. Most of my annuals this year have been eaten. This is one bug that I could really do without. I am taking them across the road and releasing them into the woods. I just hope they don’t have a homing instinct 😂

Look what I found in my hedgehog water bowl this morning 🥰

Thankfully he was fine. I love Stag beetles, probably my very favourite bug of all time. I have such fond memories of rescuing them on my way to primary school. They would get trapped on the pavement next to the park. I would set off to school early and collect them up with my mum, we would then release them in the park as we cycled through it. More me than my mum, I don’t think she was quite so keen 😂

Wow, am I nearly an influencer then? 😂 According to Facebook I am an emerging talent and I WAS waved through the crowd queuing for the show and given some free bugs! (Thanks Tim and Guy 😘)

I have just finished watching the first series of Amandaland (all about her claiming to be an influencer, truly hilarious and I actually met Joanna Lumley when I worked on the Big Breakfast show, she was amazing).

The BTS show was spectacular this year, literally thousands of people attended!! I had a great day, I really needed to relax, with all the things that have been going on at the moment.

See photos - a new species of cockroach 😁 Do take a look at the websites, I just love these clever, woolly creatures from Motley Exotics and I am a super fan of Tim Baxter from GeoScorps, take a look at all the info on his website.

Lastly, the scorpion! You will have to read my blog post later this month to to hear all about it 🤨

BTS show tomorrow 🥳 I have given my daughter strict instructions not to have her baby tomorrow because I really want to go to the show!!! It is her due date but she needs to hang on. Nanna deserves a break.

Both grandsons were helping me today. Milo’s birthday tarantula has just moulted (we now have 2 little skins since February). His Curly Hair spider is called Fluffy 😊 We fed Fluffy, then sorted the mealworms to feed the birds. Our tadpoles have now got back legs so that’s very exciting too.

Hope to see everyone tomorrow 🤞Bob wants a scorpion 😄

This year’s reptile survey is not going too well. We have visited every weekend and turned over all 31 of the sheets in our designated area, all we have found is a couple of common lizards and slow worms, no snakes at all. Then I accidentally sat on this spiky plant, my app said it was a Depressed Juniper, that sounds about right, I thought 😅

But that was yesterday, today I visited a lovely local pond, there were beautiful May flies everywhere.

It also seems to be a good year for May bugs (cockchafers), Milo and I were rescuing them and putting them in our garden.
