A few tips I have found helpful to keep you and your horses going through the snow and ice 🧊
🥶 Use old buckets and layer them with straw and put your water buckets inside it to stop from freezing over .
🥶Adding salt to the water can help stop it freezing too and can encourage horses to drink more , but always make sure fresh water is available .
🥶Add hot water to take the chill off buckets , horses are less likely to drink freezing cold water . It also helps to stop it freezing over too quickly . ( obviously be careful the whole bucket isn’t boiling !)
🥶 Add salt to feeds of you give them , this can make your horse want to drink more .
(Compaction colic is a worry this time of year with horse eating more hay and less movement with restricted or no turnout )
🥶Use hot water to soak your mashes to make them more appealing, you can also make them a bit sloppier to increase fluid intake .
🥶 Make sure there is plenty of forage available in multiple places to encourage movement .
For example , I use around 3 /4 sections more of hay am and pm during this time than I usually would .
🥶 If you soak hay , use old turnout rugs to cover the tub to stop it freezing over .
🥶use hot water to rinse it , I don’t use haynets during hard frosts or snow incase it freezes to the nets , I tip it out instead ( personal preference)
🥶 avoid no fill turnout rugs on unclipped horses . It flattens the coat that creates the air pockets that keep them warm , if you really think they need it, opt for a 50g instead .
🥶Don’t forget to carry on with your sand out pellets / physllium routine throughout the winter months .
Each horse and pony is different so take care changing things with feed and water , make small changes and it can be trial and error with what works and does not work for you and your fur babies . These are just a few of my tried and tested tips that I have found useful 🙌
