Ticks do not fall from trees. They do not jump. They do not fly. They climb grass stems, extend their front legs, and wait for something warm to brush past. 🌿

The sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus) — Britain's most common tick — positions itself at ankle to knee height on vegetation, anchors with its back legs, and spreads its front legs wide. Haller's organs on the front legs detect CO₂, body heat, and vibration. When you brush the vegetation, it transfers.

Then it climbs — sometimes for hours — until it finds exposed skin. The tick you find behind your ear started at your ankle. The myth of ticks dropping from branches is not documented. It was at your feet the whole time.

Ticks in Britain are most active from March to June and again in autumn. Ixodes ricinus can transmit Lyme disease (caused by Borrelia burgdorferi), which is now established across most of Britain — the UK Health Security Agency estimates around 3,000 confirmed cases per year, with many more suspected. Lyme disease is treatable when caught early; the characteristic bull's eye rash around a bite is a signal to seek medical advice promptly.

What works:

Tuck trousers into socks — the transfer happens at ankle height.

Permethrin spray on shoes and trouser legs — neutralises ticks at the point of contact.

DEET or picaridin on exposed skin — disrupts the heat signature ticks follow.

Check after every outdoor session — armpits, hairline, behind ears, waistband.

Stick to mown paths where possible — ticks concentrate at the vegetation edge where cover meets open ground.

If a tick has attached: remove with fine-pointed tweezers or a tick removal tool, gripping close to the skin and pulling upward steadily without twisting. Clean the site. Note the date. 🌿

To all my old and new followers, hi! I’m Alice, the person behind Alice’s Wonderland Walkies.

I’ve recently moved from Lincolnshire to Norfolk, and I’m in the process of relaunching my little business for a whole new community.

This business came from a big shift in perspective. What I do now couldn’t be more different from my previous career, but my days feel calmer, more fulfilling, and genuinely rewarding. The pets I care for bring so much joy and laughter into my life, and there are so many little “pinch me” moments that remind me how lucky I am to call this my job.

If you’ve seen me out and about, you’ve probably noticed I’m usually a bit muddy, covered in dog hair, and often singing to myself and the dogs. If you book a walk, drop-in, or sit, that’s exactly who’ll turn up at your door… minus the singing.

This year, my goal is simple. I want to grow. Grow the business, keep learning, and say yes to new opportunities as they come.

You don’t have to be here because you’re looking to book anything. If you’re just here for some day-out inspiration or a dopamine hit from fluffy faces, you’re more than welcome. And if you ever do need a hand with your own pet, I’m always happy to chat.

Getting some blue on the grid as it is finally the beginning of spring 🌷
I'm looking forward to the next few months, more sunshine, longer days, and I'm nearly fully booked with pet sits! Very excited to meet new doggos and ofcourse see some returning pets this spring.
There are a lot more adventures to come in beautiful Norfolk!

Today is National Pay a Compliment Day. So please take in these words for yourself, or send them to someone you think needs to hear it...

For the pet owners who dread the walk in case they’re judged for their dog reacting.

For the ones worrying they’re not doing enough enrichment compared to the online dog mum.

For those who can’t always afford the latest toy, harness, or matching outfit.

And for the pet owners who miss a walk on the days getting out of bed feels like too much.

You're doing a good job.
You are doing enough.
And your pets know they are loved and safe with you.

At the end of the day, all they really want is to be by your side. 🐾

I had the pleasure of taking adorable Dottie out for her walkies the other day.
She was a little unsure to begin with, but after a few treats, she soon came out of her shell and was absolutely loving life!

Can't wait to see that little face of hers again 🐶
