Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue

Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue Guinea Pig Rescue & Sanctuary covering Cheshire, North Wales & Merseyside. We offer rehoming, adoptions, bonding, grooming & holiday boarding.

Our adoption Policy 2023:

1: Rehoming

If you live in a rented property please check with your landlord you can have Guinea Pigs in your home. We rehome Guinea Pigs to SMOKE FREE homes. However we allow both indoor and outdoor homes. Guinea pigs make wonderful family pets however we recommend any interaction with children younger than 8 is supervised. Homes with young children are encouraged to

apply. We ourselves have 5 young children so our piggies are well used to seeing/being handled by young children. We will only rehome single Guinea Pigs to live with an existing companion to ensure they don't get lonely unless this is in the pigs best interest. So be prepared to adopt a pair. Adoption donation of £30 per Guinea Pig is compulsory. We match our Guinea Pigs with your circumstances - A set up check will be carried out via a date proofed photo. All our guinea pigs are re-homed on the basis that they are not to be used for breeding. We cannot guarantee the age of sows, so it is important sows are not bred from. Birth problems can occur in sows that have not had a litter before the age of 12 months. Most of our rescue guinea pigs boars and sows have already had a difficult time and just want a peaceful loving home free from extra stress. All Adoptions are considered on an individual basis.

2: Existing pets:
Think carefully how your exisiting pets will accept new family members, this mainly refers to Dogs and cats. Dogs are a huge part of a family, and some breeds can instinctively be interested in rodents !! So its worth taking into consideration how your beloved pooch will welcome Guinea Pigs into your home. We have added this reminder to our policy as sadly Guinea Pigs were recently returned due to a pet dog becoming very stressed and not leaving them alone. We recommend all owners never leave their Guinea Pigs unsupervised around other animals and use a fully enclosed run in their garden.

3. Health

A full health check and mite check is carried out when every the guinea pig is admitted to the rescue. However, we cannot guarantee this and therefore we recommend a preventative 3 monthly dose of ivermectin. Bonding: Owners who have experience of guinea pig care have the choice to carry out this out themselves at home and before introducing a guinea pig to an existing Guinea Pig.The wellbeing of a depressed guinea pig is paramount and the benefits of exclusion have to be weighed up. Guinea pigs can be placed near to one another so at least they can share conversation and smells. This is occasionally done with neutered boars.

4: Hutches/Cages

Outdoor / winter definition :
Hutch outside during summer months, moving to a Garage / Shed from October to March - with lighting during the winter months. Area not used for car storage. Indoor definition : Inside your home / conservatory. Outdoor/Winter:
Minimum requirements
Secure garden with run available/fox proof mesh
Garage/Shed - with lighting and heat as required. Area not used for car storage

5ft x 2ft length hutch - minimum for 2 Guinea Pigs, this size gives plenty of room for toys and tunnels. A double hutch is a great choice for a trio of Guinea Pigs
Outdoor secure covered run minimum 5ft x 2ft
Waterproof and windproof cover. We recommend the Chartwell 5ft hutch double or single, its very well made and meets the requirement
5ft x 3ft run

Indoor: Minimum requirements for 2/3 Guinea Pigs. A minimum 140cm length Guinea Pig cage. 160cm is preferred and will make your piggies happier. C & C grid set up - 4 grid x 2 grid minimum (loft space optional)

5: Diet
Adoptees agree to ensure the guinea pig is fed fresh meadow hay, a varied fresh low calcium diet and dried nuggets with added vitamin C . The rescue advises a low calcium diet to help avoid bladder problems. Science selective grain free nugget or burgess excell are our prefered products. Good examples are:
Burgess excell / Mr Johnsons Guinea Pig Advanced / Science selective and Science selective grain free / Harringtons
Hay and fresh water MUST be available at all times.

Handsome neutered boar Elvis was rehomed the other day to live with 4 lovely ladies. He’s seems to be taking his new lifestyle in his stride! Although he has chosen a favourite: the beautiful Caramel. It’s yet to be seen how the others feel about this favoritism, but so far all 5 are getting on swimmingly 🥰💜

Lovely Nina is a resident of our sanctuary her, she’s around 6.5 years old and has been with us for 2 years. Through old age she is as blind as a bat bless her, and thought she was completely covered and hidden in what was left of this tube 😂🙈 I don’t think I have the heart to tell her we can all see her!

We have a yellow weather warning for heat over the next few days. Guinea pigs are often more vulnerable to heat than cold, and the highest temperatures we experience can be fatal without the proper care. Here’s some tips on how to keep your piggies cool!

1. Water: plenty of fresh, cool water. Even if they don’t look like they need changing, water in bottles can get pretty warm.
2. Shade: if piggies are out in the garden make sure they have plenty of shade. Hides are not enough! These heat up quickly (especially the plastic ones) in direct sunlight and basically act like greenhouses. Draped towels, blankets or tarpaulins are great at providing shade.
3. Shade for outdoor hutches: Placing wet towels on top of outdoor hutches can help keep them cooler, as the sun evaporates the water off them to provide a cooling effect - make sure to check them every few hours in the hottest part of the day 👍
4. Snacks: giving more water-filled vegetables such as cucumber throughout the day helps keep piggies hydrated (especially those that don’t drink very much).
5. Cooling: air cons and fans are great if you have them. Cooling pads and ice packs are also a great option, as piggies can sit near them if they want to.

Hydration is so important, and guinea pigs are not always the best at drinking as much as they should 🤦‍♀️

Signs of heatstroke in Guinea pigs:
- collapsing, wobbly walking, labored breathing, seizures/convulsions, lethargy/confusion.
Babies or older Guinea pigs or those with medical issues are more at risk.

Immediate treatment for heatstroke:
1. hydration: syringe feed them as much water as you can.
2. Cooling: place them on a cool damp towel, and place one over their back to dampen their fur and promote evaporative cooling. Once wet remove the towel. You want cool water not freezing. Don’t cover the head with the towel. NEVER submerge them in cold water as this can cause shock. To help with the cooling, fan them to keep them cool.

Seek veterinary help if you’re at all worried.

Hope this is helpful, and let’s keep those piggies cool & happy! 💪

James here! It has come to our attention that someone on tiktok has been taking our content from Facebook and Instagram and posting it as their own. This has been done without our knowledge or permission and with no attempt to credit us as the original posters! We love seeing people share and engage with our posts, but the issue here is that they have made no attempt to refer to us in any way.

Eleanor works her heart out pretty much every day to keep our piggies well and happy, so that she can make the 30 second video or take the few photos that we all love seeing, let alone all the set up and failed takes no one but me and her see. She does it all so that any awareness helps piggies and their owners and all funds raised go straight back into the rescue.

She's understandably quite upset about this as someone else is profiting from her hard work, hence why I'm writing this post.

We are working on getting our own tiktok account active again, and have reported the account in question. In the meantime we'd appreciate it if you guys would not engage with the account in question and let us know about any other accounts you see in future.

Love as always,

CGPR

Today is Sienna’s 3rd Birthday & Sophia’s 4th Birthday 🥳 Both came in separately, but happen to share a birthday! Sienna had a nasty bone infection which we managed to get on top of. Despite saving her leg from amputation, she has been left with a permanent limp, but you wouldn’t know it from how difficult she is to catch 😂 Sophia is a very sweet and gentle girl who brings an extra level of calm to the herd. She loves meeting new people (especially children) at our fundraising events 🥰 Happy Birthday girls! 🎈🎂

Yesterday was Saffron’s 3rd birthday 🥳 We like to keep a few slightly younger females in the herd as it keeps the older ones going :) Saffron also seems to really enjoy being part of a larger group, and has never coped well in a pair when we’ve tried. The herd is right for her and we’re happy to have her 🥰
