❗️🐴 HORSE OWNERS - EQUINE FLU UPDATE 🐴❗️
Cases of equine flu are on the rise, with 44 cases confirmed across 28 counties in the UK since the start of April.
What are the signs?
- Nasal discharge
- Temperature over 38.5C
- Harsh cough
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
How does it spread?
Equine influenza is highly contagious and can travel up to 5km in favourable conditions! Make sure to wash hands, clothing, boots etc between handling/stables/yards.
How can it be prevented?
Equine influenza is a virus, meaning vaccination is the only prevention.
❗️Even horses that are fully vaccinated are advised to have a booster vaccine if it’s been more than 6 months since their last one❗️
If you are bringing new horses onto the yard or taking horses to competitions, make sure you have somewhere to quarantine them for 2-3 weeks after they arrive on the yard.
