Zeya kindly showing off some of her routine.

My youngsters are not ridden frequently, as I believe in building a solid foundation through slow, thoughtful development. Zeya is a great example—she regularly takes part in a variety of non-ridden activities that help keep her strong, supple, and mentally engaged.

Some people believe young horses should be left alone in stables or small paddocks until they’re ready to be ridden. However, this doesn’t align with how young horses develop in the wild. Feral or wild young horses naturally cover between 6 to 12 miles (10 to 20 km) per day as they follow the herd to graze, find water, and explore. This constant, low-intensity movement is essential for building strong bones, joints, and overall fitness.

In domestic settings, we need to provide similar opportunities for movement and education. That includes natural exercise, social interaction, and exposure to a variety of environments. Equally important is consistent groundwork and handling to establish manners, trust, and confidence before introducing ridden work. Throwing everything at a youngster all at once—without proper preparation—can lead to stress, confusion, and long-term behavioral or physical problems.

A little throwback to Zeya’s very first trot steps with me last year — and now here we are, happily cantering whenever we find an open field on our hacks. So proud of how far we’ve come together!I love looking back at milestones like this.

Zeyas first trot 🥂

Zeya came to me extremely nervous and headshy she was reactive to any slight movements and didn’t have a lot of trust in anyone.
She would blind panic and bolt in the school if loose in the school and was very unsure of herself.
A year of slowly building her confidence and then slowly backing she has really found herself and her confidence. We have built trust and a strong bond although she still has her unsure moments.

She isn’t fond of the bit and is sensitive in the mouth so we are now riding off the head collar which has made her so much more happier although I still bridal her for sessions as I want her to be able to get comfortable with the bit for her future.

There is no timescale for breaking a horse if you are able to communicate with them and listen to them they will tell you what they need.

Incredibly proud of how far Zeya has come 🤎
