๐Ÿโ„๏ธ Getting Our Bees Ready for Winter! ๐Ÿ‚

After speaking with the Chalfonts Beekeepersโ€™ Society, which weโ€™re members of, weโ€™ve made a few changes to help our bees through their first winter.

Weโ€™ve added insulation under the roof and wrapped the sides of the hive to give them some extra protection from the cold. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿก

Hopefully this will help them get through the winter safely! ๐Ÿ’š

Howโ€™s everyone elseโ€™s winter preparation going? Have we missed anything?

๐Ÿโ„๏ธ Getting Our Bees Ready for Winter! ๐Ÿ‚

As this is our first year of beekeeping at Meadowtail Farm, weโ€™re looking for a little advice from fellow beekeepers!

How does everyone prepare their hives for winter? ๐Ÿ

Do you insulate your hives, reduce the entrances, or do anything else to help your bees through the colder months?

Weโ€™d especially love to hear from anyone in Hertfordshire or the surrounding areas.

Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ

๐Ÿฅ’๐ŸŒฑ Growing Cucumbers Outdoors! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅ’

This year Iโ€™ve found that growing cucumbers directly in the ground has been much more productive than growing them in the greenhouse!

All of these cucumbers have come from just one plant, and itโ€™s still producing! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅ’

Itโ€™s amazing what you can grow with a little space and some patience.

Does anyone else find their cucumbers grow better outdoors than in a greenhouse? ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ๐ŸŒง๏ธ A Rainy Morning at the Hive! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ

Even with the rain coming down this morning, some of our bees are still hanging around outside the hive entrance!

It got me wondering โ€” why wouldnโ€™t they just head inside where itโ€™s warm and dry? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ

Is this normal behaviour, especially as we head towards winter?

Any experienced beekeepers have an explanation? Always looking to learn more about these fascinating little creatures! ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ Our First Honey! ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ

Last month we reached another exciting milestone at Meadowtail Farm โ€” we extracted our first small amount of honey!

We shared it with friends and family as little samples, and it was amazing to finally taste what our bees have been busy producing. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’›

It may have been a small harvest, but itโ€™s another big step towards our Meadowtail Farm dream. ๐ŸŒฑ

Thank you to everyone supporting our journey! ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฑ Help Us Grow Meadowtail Farm ๐Ÿ๐Ÿพ

Weโ€™re working towards something much bigger with Meadowtail Farm โ€” a place that brings together animals, growing food, wildlife, learning and the local community. ๐Ÿ’š
Weโ€™ve got lots of exciting plans and projects weโ€™d love to bring to life, but getting there is going to take time and support.

If youโ€™d like to help us on our journey, any donation, no matter how small, really does help us move one step closer to the bigger projects weโ€™re working towards. ๐Ÿ™
If youโ€™re unable to donate, simply sharing our GoFundMe would mean just as much and could help our story reach someone who can support us.

๐Ÿฅ’ Cucamelon size comparison! ๐Ÿฅ’

Weโ€™ve had quite a range of sizes from our cucamelon plants this year! We lined a few up next to a ยฃ1 coin to show the difference. ๐Ÿ˜„

It got us wondering โ€” what is the average size a cucamelon should grow to? Are some of these getting a little too big, or do you let yours grow this size before picking them?

Would love to see what everyone else is growing! ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ… Tomato advice needed! ๐Ÿ…

Sadly, one of our tomato plants has fallen over and the main stem has broken off. ๐Ÿ˜ข

There are still plenty of tomatoes on it at different stages of ripening, so Iโ€™m wondering โ€” will they continue to ripen if I leave them attached to the broken stalk, or would I be better taking them all off and ripening them indoors?

What would you do? Any tips welcome! ๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ A little beekeeping question!

Weโ€™ve noticed a few bees underneath the hive, on the outside of the mesh floor, and they seem to be hanging around underneath while the rest of the colony is above.

Are these bees simply getting a little confused and trying to find their way back into the hive, or is there another reason they gather underneath the mesh?

Would be great to hear from any experienced beekeepers who have seen this before. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฏ
