Won’t be long before he goes into hibernation until next spring! 😅

Want an exercise that stimulates both your dog’s mind and body? Searching games are perfect 🎯
—
Searching games are a time-efficient way to work on your dog’s fitness, engage their brain and develop a new skill—all while giving them an outlet for one of their most natural behaviours: using their nose 👃🏼
—
Start by simply holding your dog by their harness or collar > throw their toy somewhere it can land out of sight (long grass is always a good place to start) > once the toy has landed and stopped moving, release them to search for and retrieve it.
—
As they get better, get creative and gradually increase the difficulty of the environment. The less they can rely on their eyes, the more they’ll have to use their nose 🧠
—
This is the main game we play with Biggs now, and he loves it. It keeps him fit, works his brain and gives him something genuinely fulfilling to do.
—
There’s another benefit for brachycephalic dogs like Biggs too—searching encourages him to actively use his nose and sniff, rather than everything being high-intensity, open-mouth exercise.
—
It’s also relatively low-impact on his body—which is especially important for Biggs, being both an ageing Frenchie and post-injury ❤️‍🩹
—
A simple game that works the body, brain and nose 🐽🐾

Making the most of the last of the warm summer days with some of nature’s hydrotherapy 🏊‍♂️
—
Biggs used to hate water until he realised a few summers ago that it’s a great way to cool off—and he’s been a water baby ever since! 🦦
—
Since then, swimming has been a staple of his routine through the warmer months—offering a taxing workout with very little impact on his body. It was also a huge part of his physical recovery after breaking his elbow.
—
When taking him swimming, we always make sure his entries into the water are controlled and only let him swim in sensible spots.
—
Biggs is a fair-weather swimmer, so these dips won’t be happening for much longer. Not until next spring anyway!
—
⚠️ Extra safety tip for flat-faced breeds: only throw sticks, balls on ropes, or ideally bumpers (like in this clip) for them to retrieve, as they’re easier for them to grab hold of. They can end up pushing regular balls further and further away while trying to get hold of them and quickly get themselves into difficulty. Jamie once had an unplanned dip in this lake to rescue Biggs, who did exactly this and almost drowned.

Another one of our favourite raw additions—a whole English rainbow trout 🐟
—
We’ve fed our dogs whole oily fish for years and really notice the difference in their coats! It’s a natural source of high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, which support healthy skin and coat, joints and overall wellbeing.
—
Where possible, we like to feed fish whole. Skin, flesh and bone all provide different nutrients, while crunching through the whole thing gives the dogs genuine enrichment and satisfies natural feeding behaviours.
—
Mackerel was our go-to, but finding responsibly sourced mackerel has become increasingly difficult due to concerns around overfishing—so this time we opted for English rainbow trout instead.
—
As with raw meaty bones, we choose an appropriately sized fish for the dog (Biggs gets sardines), feed them raw and always supervise.
—
Good nutrition is often pretty simple 🐾
—
P.S. Bullet always eats the head first 🙈

Despite reducing Greg’s raw from 1.2kg to 1kg a day over the past few weeks while he rested his torn paw—and then dealt with inhaling something that caused him breathing issues—the extra rest has seen him beef up to around 35kg, from his usual 33.5–34kg. And he’s looking incredible for it 💪🏼
—
For us, keeping our dogs lean and in peak physical condition has always been a priority. Not just because of how they look, but because of what it allows them to do.
—
Excess weight puts more strain on joints, bones and connective tissues, making movement harder and increasing the risk of injury. Over time, excess weight is also associated with a range of health problems and a shorter lifespan.
—
A lean, well-muscled dog is better equipped to move freely, stay active and enjoy the things that make them happy—whether that’s running through the woods, swimming, working, playing or simply getting around comfortably as they get older.
—
And importantly, lean doesn’t mean skinny. We want good muscle mass, a visible waist and abdominal tuck, with ribs that are easy to feel (and sometimes see) beneath a thin covering of fat.
—
Good nutrition, appropriate exercise, plenty of time outdoors and proper recovery all play their part.
—
Keep them lean. Keep them fit. Keep them moving 🐾

We got asked what Biggs eats in a day 🐷

His answer? “Not enough.” 😅

In truth, it’s pretty simple: whole foods, a few daily staples, and natural supplements chosen to support the lifestyle he enjoys.

Despite his semi-retirement, Biggs still loves strutting his stuff in the woods, swimming (summer months only), visiting local coffee shops and pubs, and making sure everyone knows he’s the main man 😎

This is what keeps our little pig fuelled for the job 🐾
