Heat stroke in dogs isn’t just feeling dizzy and warm, it can be lethal, causing organ failure, internal bleeding and seizures. It’s really nasty and it can be avoided.

Dogs can’t sweat so they have no way of cooling down in hot weather. So don’t take them walking, keep them shaded and offer plenty to drink. Cooling mats and paddling pools are great too.

Signs of heat stroke are panting, salivating, tongue lolling, red gums, weakness or wobbling, vomiting, diarrhoea, collapse and even death.

If your dog shows any signs, soak them in cold water straight away, keep them wet and put a fan on them. Then call a vet and transport them ideally in an air conditioned car.

Don’t cover them in wet towels as these warm up quickly and act as insulation. Don’t go squirting lemon juice into their mouths as you might have read on Facebook (why ever would you????????). Don’t worry about using tepid water, cold tap water is perfect. It doesn’t cause shock, that’s just a myth. Human sufferers get immersed in ice water for the best chance of recovery.

Please please this is prime lambing season do NOT use that trite phrase ‘my dog will be fine ‘ dogs are prey driven they can’t help it but you can.

Keep dogs on a lead at this time of the year around livestock. 💜
