Now is the perfect time to run a prevention treatment in your pond before the water temperature drops, bacteria starts to die off and the fish slow down. Treating now reduces chances of problems in the spring when the dormant parasites wake up and want to feed, your fish will have a lower immune system so it will be harder to fight them off or treat in the colder temperatures.

Using salt in a fish pond can provide health benefits to koi by aiding with osmoregulation, treating parasites, reducing stress, and detoxifying nitrite levels.

Anti-parasite treatment in a fish pond offers significant benefits by improving koi health and water quality, preventing severe outbreaks of harmful parasites like flukes, lice, and white spot, and reducing stress on fish whose immune systems are already weakened. Regular treatment strengthens the fish's immune response, encourages mucus production for a healthy slime coat, and can even help mitigate the effects of nitrite toxicity, all of which are crucial for the long-term well-being of your fish.

The leaves will be dropping, just like the temperature is.

There are a few ways to help free your pond of leaves and vegetation debris.

Have you thought of a skimmer? Some are floating, some attach to your pump. Either would be a great idea to get that floating waste out. You should also be netting out any leaves that you notice. Before long, they will disintegrate and sink to the bottom, causing issues later on. Good water quality is essential all year round, not just when we are out in the spring and summer watching them and feeding them.

Putting a net cover over is another option. We have several sizes to suit many ponds. You could even staple them to a few frames, which can be lifted off in seconds. They come with pegs, should you wish to use them.

Drop in soon and pick up your autumn essentials.

In autumn, switch koi from high-protein food to a wheat germ-based staple food as their metabolism slows with cooler water temperatures (around 10-15°C), which is essential for proper digestion. Feed less frequently, only offering what they can consume quickly, and stop feeding entirely if the water temperature drops below 10-12°C, as undigested food can cause serious health issues. Monitor water temperature with a pond thermometer to determine when to reduce feeding and switch foods
