Meet Ding — the pluckiest pup in town! 🐾💦
This determined Cairn Terrier comes to hydrotherapy with more style than a rockstar on tour (and just as much attitude). He’s working hard to strengthen those knees — bilateral luxating patella may sound fancy, but then again, so is he.

Ding is the definition of commitment. His owner insists he swims like a philosopher: deeply contemplative, occasionally sceptical, but always magnificent.

Keep paddling, Ding — you’re the poster pup for resilience and charm! 🌊🐶✨

🌊 Spot the Dog! 🐾

This handsome Fox Terrier is one of our amazing hydrotherapy clients here at Stage 1 Hydrotherapy. Spot visits us regularly as part of his care plan for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), a progressive condition that affects the spinal cord in dogs.

To help him stay strong and mobile, Spot receives a combination of underwater treadmill therapy and laser treatment. These therapies work together to support his muscles, improve his circulation, and keep that tail wagging!

He’s a brave little guy with a big heart, and as you can see, he rocks his treadmill sessions like a pro! 💪🐶

Keep it up, Spot — we’re all so proud of you! 💙

A well-known dog training program recently took a step in the right direction by consulting a veterinarian to check for pain before proceeding with training—something that should be standard. However, the optimism faded when the assessment appeared rushed and incomplete.

The dog, showing possible signs of discomfort, was only briefly touched before being declared pain-free—simply because it was wagging its tail. But pain doesn’t always present in obvious ways. Just as humans can smile while in pain, a wagging tail doesn’t automatically mean a dog is comfortable.

🔹 This is especially concerning for dogs with spinal injuries, joint issues, or chronic conditions, where pain assessment requires careful observation and hands-on evaluation—not just a quick glance.

Recognising Signs of Pain in Dogs

Pain can be subtle, and different types (musculoskeletal, visceral, acute, or chronic) present in various ways. Watch for:
✔ Changes in movement or posture
✔ Avoidance of touch or handling
✔ Shifts in behavior or temperament
✔ Subtle facial expressions like squinting or lip licking

If you suspect your dog is in pain, don’t settle for a superficial check—advocate for a thorough assessment by a skilled professional.

🌟 March’s Star of the Month – Max! 🌟

Everyone, meet Max — our brilliant Border Collie and true hydrotherapy success story! 🐾💙

After a few years away, Max returned to hydro, needing a little extra help managing his arthritis. Through hard work, wagging tails, and plenty of splashes, he’s back to living his best life — enjoying long walks on the beach and dunes once again. And the best part? Max no longer depends on his arthritis medications!

We are so proud of how far he’s come and honoured to be part of his journey. Watching Max race across the sand again is what it’s all about! Keep shining, superstar! ✨

Client Spotlight: Meet Charlie, a 4-year-old Maltese who has had spinal surgery. His recovery is more complex due to his hypermobility in his hind legs, but he's made great progress so far. Hydrotherapy has helped him regain mobility and strength and wag his tail again! Here are some great photos of him mid-shake!
Have you ever seen a dog enjoy hydrotherapy this much? Drop a ❤️ for Charlie! 😂🐕❤️

Patience isn’t just a virtue—it’s science. The body follows a timeline for healing:

Bone healing: 8-12 weeks for initial repair, months for full strength.

Tendons & ligaments: 3-6 months to rebuild properly.

Muscles: Weeks to months, depending on severity of injury.

Nerves: Can take a year or longer to regenerate.

Skipping steps or pushing too hard too soon can cause long-term damage. The best way to support healing? A safe, structured rehabilitation plan tailored to your dog’s needs.

Choosing a Qualified Canine Hydrotherapist: Why It Matters

When it comes to your dog’s safety, health, and rehabilitation, qualifications matter! It’s easy to assume that anyone offering hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, or other veterinary rehabilitation services is properly trained, but did you know there’s a huge difference between a reputable qualification and a quick online course?

A properly trained canine therapist will have studied canine anatomy, physiology, hydrotherapy techniques, and safety protocols in depth. These qualifications take years to achieve—not just five minutes online!

But qualifications alone aren’t enough—ongoing learning is just as important. That’s why I complete at least 25 hours of high-quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every year, as required by my two professional associations, IRVAP and IAAT. This ensures I stay up to date with the latest research, techniques, and best practices to provide the highest standard of care for your dog.

Before booking a session, always check:

✔️ Where they trained and what qualifications they hold
✔️ Their qualifications should be easily accessible (on their website, displayed in the clinic, etc.)
✔️ If they are registered with a professional body and have their membership on display
✔️ Their commitment to ongoing professional development
✔️ Their experience working with dogs, especially those with medical conditions

At Stage 1 Hydrotherapy, I am fully qualified, continually learning, and passionate about what I do—because your dog deserves the very best care!

Is your dog's healthcare professional as qualified as they claim to be?
