PET TRAVEL RULES TO THE EU ARE CHANGING FROM 22nd APRIL 2026. We received a briefing from the APHA yesterday to say that an EU Pet Passport issued or held by a pet owner who is resident in GB will no longer be a valid document for travelling with pets from GB to EU. Instead, an Animal Health Certificate will be needed. This may affect your travel plans - please see the APHA website

Almost 20 years ago, my cat Petit Filous came into our lives after being found as a kitten, scavenging in a skip. Yesterday, I took the difficult decision to let her pass away peacefully and painlessly at home to alleviate her suffering. It is an enormous privilege to be able to end a life so humanely and, although we will miss the ti**le of her little bells and her lovely friendly nature, we know that losing her was an act of kindness and the right thing to do. We’re always here to help and guide clients make those difficult decisions. Please feel free to share your pictures of your loved and lost furry friends.

One of the wonderful things about our job is that no two days are ever the same. Vet nurse Katie and vet Ben were treated to a wonderful meerkat experience today when Gargs Animal Encounters brought in this lovely little guy for some routine parasite control. Gorgeous!

LUNGWORM ALERT -please don’t be complacent about lungworm in the winter months, even in cold weather, slugs and snails are still about as this photo shows. It was taken by a client whose dog had previously had a near fatal brain bleed due to lungworm. Thankfully the dog is now protected by regular treatment for lungworm. Lungworm larvae can survive in water for 6 weeks so puddles can be a source of infection or anywhere where slugs, snails or foxes have been. We have a lot of lungworm in our area. Please speak to us for advice if you need.

We would like to wish our patients, clients and colleagues a very Happy Christmas! Thank you for your kind wishes and generous gifts. This year even our team’s animals have not been able to avoid the dreaded Christmas poisoning (chocolate brownies and mince pies, thankfully no harm done due to quick action). If you are concerned that your pet could have been poisoned, the Animal Poisons Line can be contacted on 01202 509000 to give expert advice and may save a trip to the vets. We are closed from 4pm today, and will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. If you have an emergency during this time, please contact Kew Vets on 01279 422066, please listen to the message with another number to call.
