DEFRA has announced changes to the exemption rules for XL Bullies and other prohibited dog types.

From July 2026, third-party liability insurance will no longer be required. A new rule from November 2026 will also mean children under 12 cannot be left in close proximity to an exempted dog without adult supervision.

🚨 Northern Ireland Could Lead UK on Aversive Collar Restrictions

Northern Ireland could be about to set a precedent for the rest of the UK.

On Monday, the Northern Ireland Assembly is due to debate a motion calling for restrictions on multiple aversive training devices, including shock collars, prong collars, choke chains and so called "grot collars".

While the motion itself would not immediately change the law, it is significant because it targets several aversive devices in a single legislative push rather than focusing on just one type of equipment.

The debate comes alongside a wider DAERA consultation on animal welfare reforms, which remains open until the 30th of June.

If supported, the motion would send a clear signal about the direction of future animal welfare policy in Northern Ireland and could be closely watched by policymakers elsewhere in the UK.

✅ It's not just a box-ticking exercise – it's the law.

✅ A licence means they’ve been inspected and meet DEFRA standards for safety, cleanliness, and welfare.

✅ It covers things like emergency plans, secure premises, and how many dogs they’re allowed to care for.

Always ask to see a licence – a good boarder will be proud to show you. 🐶💼
