Did you know that senior cats take around three times longer to rehome than kittens?

Today is Mature Moggies Day, a day dedicated to celebrating older cats and raising awareness of the challenges they can face when looking for a new home.

Older cats have so much to offer. Many are affectionate, settled companions who are happy to enjoy a cosy routine, a comfortable bed and quality time with their favourite people.

A huge thank you to Christine for these items gifted from our Amazon wishlist!

This kitten food will help support a mum and her kittens for almost two weeks, while the mouse deterrents and batteries will help keep our store cupboards mouse-free in a humane way.

As you can see, the mice are already taking the hint and moving on in an orderly fashion! 🐭

Bertie is still waiting for his forever home 💕

This week’s Sunday Spotlight is Bertie, who has sadly been overlooked since coming into our care.

After arriving when his previous owners were unfortunately no longer able to keep him, Bertie has shown himself to be a loving cat with plenty of affection to give.

He enjoys company and fuss, especially a good head scratch, and will happily roll around, making biscuits and purring away.

Bertie is looking for a quiet home where he can enjoy life at his own pace. He could potentially live with older children aged 10+, and may be able to live with a dog following a careful introduction.

Once settled, he would also benefit from access to a safe outdoor space away from busy roads.

We think Bertie has all the qualities of a wonderful companion, and we’d love to see him enjoying a home of his own.

We're looking for Cat Care Volunteers 🐾

Surrey Cat Centre are looking for volunteers to join our Cat Care team for the following shifts:

• Monday Afternoon Cat Care: 2:30pm–5:00pm
• Saturday Cat Care: 2:30pm–4:00pm

This is a practical, hands-on role helping our small team maintain high standards of care for the cats in our centre.

Tasks include feeding and cleaning cats and kittens, maintaining hygiene standards, writing observations, and following daily routines and instructions.

We’re looking for volunteers who are:
• Aged 18 or over
• Reliable and able to commit weekly
• Confident working independently and as part of a team
• Comfortable following procedures and completing basic written records

Please note that while you will spend time with cats and kittens, this is not a socialising-focused role.

💛 Tom is still waiting for his forever home 💛

Tom has now been in our care for 85 days, and we’re surprised he has been so overlooked.

He has plenty of character and is a very affectionate boy who is happiest curled up on someone’s lap 🐾

Tom loves company, enjoys fuss, and is always keen to be near his favourite people. He also has a playful side and enjoys watching the world go by from his window.

He is looking for a calm, quiet home with no children or other pets, with safe outdoor access away from busy roads, where he can settle in at his own pace.

An understanding owner who can offer plenty of cuddles, as well as space when he gets a little overexcited, will help him thrive.

Why We Need Homes for “Inbetweener” Cats

Not every cat fits the mould. Some cats aren’t feral, but they’re not lap cats either. They might be shy or just prefer the outdoors. These “inbetweeners” need a halfway home, somewhere they can live safely outside, with the option to come indoors if and when they choose.

What they need:

· A rural or semi-rural home with outdoor access (including large garden spaces)

· A warm shelter (shed, stable, or outbuilding)

· Regular food and water

· A home that lets them set the pace – no expectations, just patience, no pressure to interact

What you get:

· A quiet, independent companion

· Natural pest control

· The chance to help a cat live life their way – with freedom

These cats don’t need a lap – just a little space and understanding. And maybe, one day, they’ll choose to come inside.

Why We Need Feral Cat Homes

Some cats can’t live indoors, and that’s okay. Feral cats are completely unsocialised to people, they are wild animals. They want to live outdoors, on their own terms. But they still need safety, shelter, and regular food.

What they need:

· A secure outdoor space like a barn, stable, smallholding, or yard

· Daily food and fresh water

· A dry, sheltered place to sleep (a hayloft, outbuilding, or cat shelter)

What you get:

· Natural rodent control

· Low-maintenance residents

· The satisfaction of giving a cat a second chance

Feral cats thrive in the right environment. If you’ve got the space, they’ve got the skills.
