We should all be aware that these tropical temperatures are not safe for walking our four legged friendsโ€ฆ but have no fear - your pooch need not go crazy with boredom!

There are SO many ways to provide enrichment at home so hereโ€™s a few!

Hereโ€™s some tips for home enrichment:

๐Ÿพ Use your dogโ€™s food allowance or remember to reduce their meals if youโ€™re using treats

๐Ÿพ Do any physical activity on a non slip surface in a cool room

๐Ÿพ You donโ€™t need to spend lots of money for enrichment - get creative with your
cardboard boxes, broom handles for poles, couch cushions instead of wobble cushions. Iโ€™ve even seen a cool food puzzle with a muffin tin and some tennis balls!

๐Ÿพ A great opportunity to do those physio exercises ๐Ÿ˜œ

๐Ÿพ Beat the heat by freezing something yummy into big cubes, on a licky mat or a kong - Alfs favourite is banana and peanut butter ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿพ Use toys, treats or humans for a game of โ€œfind itโ€

๐Ÿพ If your pooch is due a (cool) bath, groom or nail trim itโ€™s a great time to do so

โ˜€๏ธ Remember to always have fresh clean water available

โ˜€๏ธUse cool mats/fans and keep the curtains closed when itโ€™s too hot

โ˜€๏ธ Consider clipping your furry dogs - long coats DO NOT keep them cool!

If you need some indoor conditioning exercise inspo specific to your dog ask your physio! ๐Ÿถ

This seems to come around often but resharing this as Iโ€™ve stepped up my biosecurity again in response to the local flu outbreaks.

If there is even a suspected case on your yard please let me know so we can keep our horses safe ๐Ÿ’œ

โ€ผ๏ธ Biosecurity โ€ผ๏ธ

There is a lot of worry in the North East about Strangles at the moment so I thought I would take the opportunity to expand on my terms and conditions.

I take biosecurity seriously all year round as I have horses of my own to keep safe and have previously been through the hell of strangles. Regardless, I have added in some extra precautions at this time for peace of mind for everyone.

โ–ช๏ธ Under no circumstances will I attend a yard with confirmed OR suspected contagious disease such as flu or strangles. Please make me aware of any changes to your yards circumstances at the earliest opportunity, but rest assured there are no late cancellation charges for contagious diseases related cancellations.

โ–ช๏ธ If I attend your horse and they are showing signs of a contagious disease your horse will not be treated, you will be liable for the full cost of the session, and Iโ€™ll have to cancel the rest of my day. So please do be upfront, no judgement here!

โ–ช๏ธI will be using hand sanitizer and disinfectant on myself, my kit, my boots and my jackets between yards. I also have waterproof trousers for easy cleaning.

โ–ช๏ธ I am not one of these people that visits many yards in a day (with the exception of my out-of-area visits) but will take extra care to not visit more than 3 separate properties on any given day, with changes of clothes at the ready.

I hope all the affected horses and yards are back to normal very soon ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’œ

A recent study from the University of Tennessee provided strong support for something trainers, movement specialists, and bodyworkers have observed for years:

Ground poles significantly increase activation of important postural and core muscles in horses.

What the Study Found

Walking over ground poles increased activity in:

โ€ข Longissimus dorsi โ€” a major topline and spinal support muscle
โ€ข Abdominal muscles โ€” critical for core stability and support of the spine

Even at the walk, poles require the horse to:

โ€ข Lift the limbs higher
โ€ข Stabilize the trunk more actively
โ€ข Organize posture and balance with greater precision
โ€ข Continuously adjust limb placement and timing

At the trot, researchers also found increased activation of the abdominal muscles.

Trotting over poles requires greater dynamic stabilization, and the increased limb elevation demands more coordinated control of the trunk, pelvis, and spine.

What This Means

These findings support the long-standing use of cavaletti and ground poles as a low-impact way to:

โ€ข Strengthen the topline
โ€ข Improve abdominal engagement
โ€ข Support spinal stability
โ€ข Enhance proprioception and coordination
โ€ข Encourage improved posture and self-carriage
โ€ข Develop better movement organization through the whole body

One of the most important aspects of pole work is that it influences both sides of the postural system:

โ€ข The dorsal chain โ€” including the longissimus muscles along the back
โ€ข The ventral chain โ€” including the abdominal support system

This balance is essential for efficient movement, force transfer, and development of a healthy, functional topline.

But pole work is not only muscular.

It is neurological.

Each pole creates a movement problem the horse must solve in real time.

The horse has to:

โ€ข Judge distance
โ€ข Adjust stride length
โ€ข Control timing
โ€ข Stabilize the trunk
โ€ข Organize the limbs in space
โ€ข Adapt moment-to-moment to changing demands

That process requires attention, coordination, body awareness, and ongoing nervous system regulation.

In many horses, poles appear to improve focus not simply because the horse is โ€œbehaving,โ€ but because the nervous system is becoming more engaged and organized around the task.

Pole work may also influence neurological tone โ€” the background level of muscular and nervous system readiness that affects posture, movement quality, stiffness, and coordination.

For some horses, this can help reduce excessive bracing and improve adaptability through the body.
For others, it can help improve postural engagement and overall organization.

Why It Matters

Regular pole work can benefit many types of horses:

โ€ข Young horses developing coordination and posture
โ€ข Performance horses improving strength, agility, movement quality, and limb awareness
โ€ข Horses rebuilding core control and stability after periods of weakness or reduced work
โ€ข Older horses maintaining mobility, coordination, and movement confidence

Importantly, many of these benefits occur even at the walk, making poles accessible to horses across a wide range of ages, disciplines, and fitness levels.

Rather than simply โ€œmaking horses pick up their feet,โ€ poles appear to challenge the nervous system, postural system, sensory system, and muscular system together โ€” encouraging the horse to organize movement with greater control, awareness, and adaptability.

Todayโ€™s before and afterโ€ฆ.

What can you see? ๐Ÿ‘€

I usually forget to take photos and generally think before and afters can be a bit naff if you donโ€™t get the posture and the angles exactly the sameโ€ฆ but look at this!

This was a referral from a farrier due to the horse struggling with his hind limbs being shod, hopefully he finds it easier now ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

A good multidisciplinary team is SO important and I love it when we can put our heads together and really make a difference ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Some animals are quite guarded at first, they donโ€™t really want you faffing with them and poking sore bits. The feeling when they finally relax under your hands and accept your help is priceless! Sometimes itโ€™s quick, sometimes it takes a couple of sessions.

This chap was exactly that kind of horse, a bit stand offish, nibbling and tail swishing but then, halfway through his session he did about 10 yawns in a row and accepted my help. He makes a cute hippo with that smile, donโ€™t you think?! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜…
