Our Amber has completed 100% on her NPL. Just exams and OSCES left to go!!
Staff have been supporting Amber during her journey but her main support has come from Izzy who is her Clinical Coach.

Becoming a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) takes real dedication. Student nurses complete an RCVS‑approved qualification while working in an approved Training Practice, and they build a detailed clinical skills portfolio through the Nursing Progress Log (NPL), which covers hundreds of skills across anaesthesia, theatre practice, inpatient care, lab work, radiography, and communication — all of which must be practiced in clinic and signed off by a Clinical Supervisor.

Alongside this, students complete 20% off‑the‑job training, which includes college or university teaching, practical workshops, online learning, tutorials, and supervised training sessions.

They also gain over 1,800 hours of hands‑on experience in practice and must pass written and oral exams in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, anaesthesia, diagnostics, infection control, and professional responsibilities.

Practical OSCE exams then assess real nursing tasks such as patient preparation, bandaging, lab techniques, imaging, and theatre set‑ups. Courses can take between 24 and 48 months depending on route. Once all training and assessments are completed, students can join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses.

At KewVets we have three VCA’s (Veterinary Care Assistants) Carla, Annie and Kyle and they are invaluable to the team.

Kyle works here on Saturdays and has become an integral KewVets member!

What do our VCA’s do?
✨ Support the Veterinarians, Veterinary Nurses and reception team.
✨Maintain a clean environment for the safety of our pets coming in and out the practice, keeping ontop of infection control.
✨Spend time with the patients, encouraging them to eat, walking them, loving them.
✨Monitor fluid therapy and maintain records.
✨Administer oral medication under direction.
✨Monitor patients post operatively alongside Nursing staff.
✨Run blood samples
✨Clean, pack and sterilise kits used for surgery.
✨Give advice to owners.
And so much more!!

Our VCA’s are vigilant, caring, compassionate and hard working and we are thankful to all the hard work they do! Our team wouldn’t be complete without them ā¤ļø

As you know every month we all nominate our ā€œNurse Of The Monthā€ and this month our collective vote went to - ELLIE ā˜€ļø

This month has seen some very difficult cases which have required quick thinking, fast action and expertise, all of which Ellie has shown.
She has dealt with each case with professionalism, care and grace and she absolutely deserves the recognition!

Ellie is cool, calm and collected and you can be assured that when your fur baby is in her care they will have everything they need and more!

Well done Ellie, we are lucky to have you! You are a fantastic nurse and a credit to the team ✨

Meet Bear.

What should have been a relaxing Bank Holiday Weekend ended up being a near fatal experience for poor Bear.

Bear’s diligent owners noticed he had eaten his dinner very quickly and gulped a large amount of water afterwards. They noticed his stomach had then become bloated and he was very uncomfortable.

His quick thinking owners rang our emergency out of hours service where he was rushed in and diagnosed with having a GDV (gastric dilation volvulus). This is where the stomach is full of food, water and gas and twists, cutting off the blood supply and creating a fatal situation if left untreated. Deep chested breeds, such as Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles and St Bernard’s are most at risk. Time really is of the essence, which is why our in house emergency service is invaluable.

We’re happy to say after a successful surgery, Bear was discharged today back to his wonderful owners, where he will continue his recovery at home.

******HAS NOW RETURNED HOME******

Please keep an eye out for ā€œDoreenā€ (originally thought to be a girl šŸ˜‚) who has been missing from the Pilkingtons area of Church Langley since Friday 22nd May. Doreen is male, neutered and 18 months old. He is also microchipped. He’s very friendly, so his owners are thinking he may have gotten into a vehicle.

Having had a dog brought into us over the weekend that was rescued from a locked car by members of the public, the Police and the Fire Brigade, and temperatures staying consistently high for this coming week, let’s familiarise ourselves with the signs of heatstroke in dogs. Remember, missing one walk won’t kill your dog, but walking your dog in these temperatures might.

24/05/2026

ā˜€ļøPlease be mindful of our pets during this heatwave.
As harsh as this sounds, it will not kill your dog to miss a walk but it may by taking them out. We advise early morning walks and late evening strolls when the temperature has dropped.

ā˜€ļøPlease avoid hot cars, no pet should be locked in a car.

ā˜€ļøOur small furries need regular checks, our guineapigs, rabbits, ferrets etc, please ensure their accommodation is kept in the shade with plenty of water available. Any birds in cages should be away from direct sunlight.

Together we can have a safe sunny spell while it lasts.

As always, we are here for you should you need us. Stay cool our friends šŸ˜Ž

Sometimes when patients have been given their premedication prior to surgery they stand, sometimes they sit……. And sometimes they find a person to lay on ā¤ļøšŸ˜‚

Beautiful Fenson here chose the lay down option and who could resist!? Absolutely gorgeous!!!!
