🗣 “This is potentially a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve real change for your profession.”

In ongoing work to reform the , we’ll soon be calling on the whole veterinary nursing profession to shape your future – and every individual voice matters.

In this blog, BVNA President Lyndsay Hughes outlines the work BVNA has been undertaking throughout 2025 so far, in steps towards brand new legislation. Working alongside a small handful of other key veterinary stakeholders, BVNA has been providing the sole veterinary nursing representation in a working group led by the UK Government.

We are calling for:
🗣 Long-overdue protection of the ‘veterinary nurse’ title
🗣 Greater recognition and utilisation of the RVN skillset
🗣 Clearer routes for RVN role progression, including the retirement of Schedule 3

With the dramatic increase in ownership of brachycephalic breed dogs in the UK, vet practices are treating these dogs for both routine procedure, surgery and diseases relating to their anatomic conformation. With this, veterinary nurses will play a crucial role in their care and support throughout their anaesthesia and recovery period. This talk will discuss the specific nursing considerations for these patients and how we can make sure we are providing the best care possible in what can sometimes be challenging cases to manage.

✅ Anatomical conformation of brachy breeds and how this might affect anaesthesia requirements
✅ Hospitalisation and environmental considerations
✅ Observations and what to have ready for emergencies
✅ Managing the airway and ventilation

"How brachycephalic anatomy affects canine behaviour and communication"

One hour of FREE online CPD for BVNA members!

📆 Wednesday 27th August 2025, 19:30 - 20:30
🗣️ Tom Candy, Becka Whitehead and Jane Williams

Body language and facial expressions are key communication tools amongst all dogs. Whilst dogs can read their conspecifics’ body language very intuitively, we know that humans’ ability to read canine body language can be much more variable.

In brachycephalic breeds, reading facial expressions can be even more challenging still, with a significant impact on how body language is interpreted by not just humans, but other dogs too. The risks to health and welfare associated with brachycephaly are well-documented – but could their ability to communicate be a further cause for concern?

Join this discussion panel, chaired by BVNA Student Council Member Kate Davies, to learn more about how brachycephalic anatomy impacts behaviour and communication. Our expert panel of speakers will provide valuable insights to enable you to be an even better advocate for the brachycephalic patients in your care, and to educate caregivers of these breeds too.

This webinar is free of charge to BVNA members, and is presented as part of the BVNA Behaviour Hub project.
