Over the summer holidays, Scarlett and I joined our local library and picked out a few books at random, as you do when you’ve got a small human tugging at your arm and grabbing anything with a bright cover! 😆

One night, at bedtime, I opened a book called Delilah the Dodo, not expecting anything other than a simple story before lights out.

But just a little way into the book, I was holding back tears. 🥲

Delilah is a little dodo who dreams of flying. But she’s surrounded by other dodos who tell her she’s daft, that dodos don’t fly, and never have.

One line nearly knocked the wind out of me:

“Delilah did not often talk of her dream in case others laughed at how daft it might seem.”

I felt that in my bones.

I remembered so clearly all the times people doubted me… told me not to take the risk… warned me it wasn’t “sensible”… or told me I was lucky to have a “safe” job and should just stick with that.

But the thing is, none of those people were walking my path. They were just projecting their fear onto my dream.

And I know I’m not the only one. If you're a creative, passionate pet professional, chances are you’ve been told to “be realistic” or “not get ahead of yourself” at some point too.

But Delilah kept going. She tried. She built wings from scratch and threw herself into the sky, despite what anyone said.

Because as the story ends:

“To be the first dodo to fly, you must be the first dodo to try.”

And honestly, I’m so glad I did.

Because if I’d listened to those voices, I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be running a business I love. I wouldn’t have created the Dog Tooth Fairy. I wouldn’t be helping other pet pros follow their own dreams.

So if you’re at a crossroads, doubting yourself or wondering if you should just play it safe...

Still smiling after the most incredible weekend at The North East Dog Festival 🐾✨

The show takes place at Kirkley Hall College in Ponteland (just outside Newcastle) and it was a huge one, I think somewhere around 8,000 dog lovers came through the gates over the weekend to celebrate all things canine. And what a celebration it was!

This year marked their 10th anniversary, and I had the honour of exhibiting in the beautiful Countryside Marquee, and seen some familar faces and trader neighbours My Dog Barber, and Raggy Rascals we were surrounded by the most talented bunch of creative small businesses. From doggy wedding chaperone companies to artists creating custom prints of your dog, the marquee was buzzing with passion and purpose, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many dog breeds in one place in my life (apart from Crufts obvs!)

Huge thank you to my right-hand women Caitlin (who joined me Saturday) and Lianna (who joined me Sunday), I couldn’t have done it without you. 💚

We had so many lovely conversations, sold a fair few Emmi-Pet kits, and helped plant the seed for what’s possible when you say yes to doing things a bit differently.

This was my first ever official trade event as The Dog Tooth Fairy, and I can safely say it won’t be my last. I already can’t wait to come back next year… bigger and better!

August, you’ve been a whirlwind, full of nature, nostalgia, and the usual juggle between motherhood and business.

We’ve kept things local this summer… and honestly, that’s been more than enough.

🌿 Alpaca and goat farming club gave me Thursday mornings to catch up on admin (and drink a hot coffee in peaceQ).

💦 We’ve been swimming at our local lido, wild dipping in the River Tyne, and exploring forest schools with cousins every Friday, face paint, sticks, mud and all.

📚 Signed up for our local library, which felt like a small but mighty win. We’ve read lots of new books together, and I’ve been reminded how calming it is to just sit and read.

🏛️ We made a trip to The Sill museum, and I unexpectedly found myself really moved by the Sycamore Gap memorial. That tree meant a lot to so many of us.

And amidst all the adventures, I’ve been solo parenting a very high-energy child, which means the 5am treadmill admin sessions I planned didn’t always happen. But… I’m giving myself grace. This season was always going to be about Scarlett first.

Even with the childcare juggle, I’m proud of what I’ve still managed to keep ticking over, orders, training prep, Emmi-Pet support, and even regular coaching sessions with my lovely Laura. The flexibility this business gives me will never be lost on me. I’m truly grateful.

Today is National Dog Day 💚
So I thought I’d share a little story about how Rocco and Winnie came into my life, because neither of them were “planned,” but both of them were absolutely meant to be.

After tragically losing my standard wire-haired dachshund, Rodney, in a sudden accident, I was completely heartbroken. I’d only just opened my grooming salon and had to cancel an entire week of work, I couldn’t face seeing other people happy with their dogs when I was grieving so deeply for mine. It felt like there was this huge paw-shaped hole in my heart that nothing could fill.

Then, just weeks later, a friend got in touch asking if I knew anyone who could rehome a chihuahua. And just like that, Rocco came into my world. I’ll be honest, at first, he felt like a bit of a rebound dog. He was two years old with a few challenging behaviours, and it took time for us to find our rhythm. But now, he’s completely grown into my lifestyle, and he's the most loyal little character I could have hoped for.

Winnie came five years later. I'd always dreamed of having another dachshund, but the price tag put that dream on hold. So, I did what I could, I put her on a vision board. I focused on gratitude, poured love into Rocco, and kept walking every day with an open heart.

And then, I kid you not, a dog grooming friend messaged me completely out of the blue. She hadn’t seen the vision board. She didn’t even know I was looking. But she said, “There’s a dachshund that needs a home… and you were the first person I thought of.” That’s how Winnie came into our lives. She had been much loved, but due to a change in her owner's circumstances, she needed a new start, and she slotted into our home like she’d always been here.

Her and Rocco are honestly like Jack and Vera Duckworth. He’s the long-suffering husband, she’s the bossy but brilliant matriarch, but they adore each other. And I adore them both!

They didn’t arrive in the way I expected, but these two dogs healed my heart in ways I didn’t know I needed. So on National Dog Day, I just want to say-
Here’s to the dogs who walk beside us, love us through everything, and change our lives forever 🐾

Dogs are therapists with 4 paws and wagging tails 💖🫶

Over the last 10 years, l've often felt lonely, isolated, and at times stressed - feelings most founders will know well. I know this sounds strange, but one of the most underrated antidotes has been my dog, Pablo, who's been by my side for the best part of a decade.

Of course Dogs are known for their unconditional love, but as a founder Pablo has made me remember that life can be simple - he's helped me realise that most of my worries don't actually matter.

After a difficult day, watching him play with a bottle cap or get excited by a stick has been an interesting reminder that we can find happiness and joy in simple things and that much of our struggle is a consequence of our own overcomplicated perspective, overthinking and self-focus.

Pablo is now entering the final season of his life and has some walking issues. I know it might sound strange - especially to someone who's never had a dog - but I wish he could understand how much he's done for me, how deeply he's helped me at times, and how much I'll miss him when he's gone.

I just have to tell you why this group became so important to me.

When I first started offering Emmi-Pet in my own salon, I wasn’t 100% sure what was normal, when to refer a dog to the vet, or if I was even doing it right some days.
