As part of the celebration of the International Day of Older People, Calderdale Industrial Museum are holding a Drop- In session. The museum will be open to any older person who would like to come and see what we do at the museum and how we encourage older people to stay physically and mentally active and make a valuable contribution to the enrichment of our community. And we all have fun while we work.

Drop in on Tuesday 21st October between 11pm and 3pm, have a cuppa and a piece of cake while you talk to our volunteers about the work we do. There's no need to book and you we will have chance to go round the museum to talk to other working volunteers.

A skilled "Teasel Man" would travel between mills to replace worn teasels in the machines. This task required careful attention, as the heads had to be arranged precisely to ensure an even finish. Most of the teasels used came from specialised gardens in Somerset.

Many industrial processes are inspired by nature and can be seen as mechanized extensions of traditional handcrafts using natural tools.

The Teasel Gig is one such invention. Traditionally, teasels were used by hand to ‘comb’ the surface of damp woolen cloth, making it soft and fluffy in a process known as ‘raising the nap.’

To improve speed and efficiency, the Teasel Gig machine was developed. This device holds around 3,000 prickly teasels in an iron frame and is powered by electricity. As the cloth passes over the teasels, it achieves a more consistent and fluffy finish.

With so much heritage in Calderdale, Heritage Open Days is an ideal opportunity to explore as much as possible and usually for free. The article below highlights some of them and we are delighted to be first on the list.

The museum is open free of charge on Saturday 13th September, 10 am - 4 pm with last entry at 3 pm, as part of Heritage Open Days. We will be very happy to take donations all of which go towards our running and maintenance costs. The cafe will be open serving a selection of light lunches and snacks which can be washed down with a tea, coffee, beer, wine or cider.

With the school holidays upon us we are ready to welcome you to the museum.

The cafe is stocked with delicious lunch and snack food for you including our popular children's menu. Tomorrow there's homemade chocolate brownie, Victoria Sponge and flapjack. We are also trying out some new bread from Soul Bakery to use in our Ploughman's lunches.

There is the return of Look Draw Display in the Terry Sutton Gallery which gives our younger visitors chance to get creative and build the exhibition for us. The theme is a very important animal in this area - sheep. Come to reception to find out how to get involved. This runs from 24th July to 31st August.

Look out for more information about the other activities going on over the summer including our Great Strike Commemoration Day on 16th August and Bradford Model Engineering Society visiting on 21st and 23rd August.

The museum is open every Thursday and Saturday until 31st August from 10am - 4pm with last entry at 3pm.
