Little May has been helping me with some fencing today. Although this did involve a stop to say hello to some of our beautiful Jersey ladies.
Needle, Leena and Thread (left to right) were all absolutely fascinated by this tiny bundle of fluff.
They all know their name's and come into the parlour by call

As horse owners, it’s our responsibility to ensure our horses not only have their basic needs met but that they also have the opportunity and space to thrive.

Making sure our horses have their basic necessities such as water, forage and shelter just isn’t enough.

More and more research is becoming available, and more and more owners are proving to the remaining equine world that various management practices, such as 24/7 turnout, herd living or socialisation and free daily movement, isn’t just an ideal anymore, but something our horses are desperately missing and are paying a hefty price for long-term.

It isn’t enough that our horses seem to get by, simply functioning and surviving through one day to the next.

As owners, it’s up to us to make sure that their one, unique, individual life isn’t wasted, longing for connection, freedom, movement, enrichment, a place to play.

They deserve to live without pain, anxiety, isolation - just as any parent would want for their child or any friend would want for a loved one.

Using convenience, tradition and ease to excuse subpar care isn’t okay and it hasn’t been for a long time.

Ownership of these animals does not mean we are entitled to diminish their needs and ultimately, lower their quality of life.

They deserve to thrive, not just survive and it’s our responsibility to make that happen.

As I'm sure some of our regular followers can already tell, we do things a bit differently here at SOF and are very proud not to be your standard box livery yard.

Firstly, we are also run a small family run farm, with tractors, sheep, pigs and cattle all here, brilliant to watch and gets the horses used to all sorts of things they may well come across out in the countryside on top of some extra stimulation and experiences, sights and smells.

We firmly believe in horses being outside with space to move freely and offer 24/7 turn out 365 days a year, we don't do duvet days here, even in winter without good cause.

We don't leave big hay bales in fields to get soaking wet and the odd pony to pooh on, hay is taken fresh straight from the barn daily and spread in different areas to prevent poaching and soiled hay

We allow our horses plenty of space, you might well have a short walk down our tracks to your horses allocated field, meaning we can give them plenty of room by using all our fields

We cross graze where possible, our cattle and sheep help with the biodiversity of our soil and worm counts.

“Trust me, this horse is pampered.”

🫧🧽What People Often Think Pampering Means:

• A spotless horse with not a speck of dirt or sand on them

• Braided and kept in permanent “show-ready” condition

• Living in an isolated stall inside a spotless, polished barn

• Bathed daily, sometimes multiple times a day

• Tack gleaming, polished until it shines

• Constantly clipped whiskers, ears, and muzzle for a “clean” look

• Limited turnout so they stay “safe” and don’t get a scratch

• Ridden or exercised on strict schedules so they stay trim and polished, even if it doesn’t match their natural rhythms (“he only has to work for one hour a day”)

All of these things make HUMANS feel good. They fit OUR picture of luxury. But horses don’t define pampering the same way we do.

🐴 What Pampering Looks Like to Horses:

• A full hay net or grass buffet so their stomachs are never empty

• Rolling in dirt or sand to scratch, shed hair, and coat themselves naturally (like in this photo 🤣)

• Mutual grooming with friends, scratching each other’s withers in exactly the right spot

• Safe Turnout with space to move freely, stretch their legs, or gallop when they feel like it

• Shelter they can choose to step into or out of depending on weather

• Comfortable footing that keeps hooves strong and joints supported

• Play and exploration, whether it’s a new log to chew, a ball to nudge, or just time to be curious

• Positive interactions with humans, where training is cooperative instead of coercive

✨ A horse isn’t pampered because they look like a showpiece. They’re pampered when their needs are met in the way horses understand.
