We’re very quick to recognise an **underweight dog** as a welfare concern – and rightly so.
But an **overweight dog is also a welfare issue**, even though it’s far more socially accepted. 😢
Carrying excess weight puts huge strain on a dog’s body and can contribute to:
* Joint and mobility problems
* Reduced stamina and willingness to move
* Increased risk of illness, including some cancers
* A shorter, less comfortable life overall
Speaking honestly, as an overweight human of a certain age, I *feel* this myself. Extra weight affects joints, limits movement, and some days it can make life feel harder than it needs to be. I have the ability to understand that and make choices about what and how much I eat.
**Our dogs don’t have that choice.**
They eat what we give them – and like most of us, they’ll happily eat the lot if offered!
That means their weight is **our responsibility**, not theirs.
Keeping dogs **lean with healthy muscle** isn’t about perfection or being strict – it’s about kindness, comfort, and long-term wellbeing. A fitter dog usually:
* Moves more freely
* Enjoys walks and training more
* Stays active for longer into old age
And yes… your **bank balance may thank you too**, when you’re not spending quite so much time at the vets. 🤗🐾
If you’re unsure whether your dog is carrying too much weight, or you’d like help managing it *without* taking the joy out of food and training, drop me a DM with the word PORKIE and I will send you some tips!
