Bowโs Story: A Life Saved Through Blood Donation ๐ฉธ๐พ
With World Blood Donor Day taking place tomorrow, we'd like to share Bow's story and highlight the incredible difference that pet blood donors can make too.
Bow was brought to see us after his owner noticed a subtle change whilst out walking. Concerned that he may be developing arthritis, an appointment was booked with Vet Phillip. During his examination, Phillip noticed that Bow's gums appeared slightly pale, prompting further investigation.
Routine blood tests revealed that Bow was suffering from anaemia caused by Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA), a serious condition in which the body's immune system destroys its own red blood cells.
Treatment was started immediately and Bow was closely monitored with regular blood tests. Unfortunately, despite treatment his red blood cell count continued to fall, and it became clear that he would require a blood transfusion.
Thankfully, a suitable donor was right by Bow's side. After blood typing and cross-matching confirmed compatibility, his canine companion Stag was found to be a perfect match. Stag generously donated blood which was transfused directly to Bow.
The transfusion was a success and provided Bow with the red blood cells he desperately needed.
Stories like Bow's remind us just how important pet blood donors are. Blood cannot be manufactured, and in emergency situations, donor animals can make the difference between life and death.
As we mark World Blood Donor Day tomorrow, we would like to say a huge thank you to all of our pet blood donors and their owners. Your generosity helps save lives. โค๏ธ๐พ
