Why I raw feed 🥩
4 years ago we adopted Casey our Caucasian mix breed from Romania, he came to us in January 2022 and when he left Romania it was minus 28 and he lived outside so we initially thought he might have frost bite as his paws were red raw, as time went on we realised he was pulling the skin off his pads with his teeth, I had never seen anything like it, we started him on prednisone and hibiscub wash on his feet, and the preds did the job almost immediately 👏🏼 great yeah? Nope😭
The preds made him drink more and made him hungry which in turn changed his whole personality and made him reactive towards our dogs we already had, he started raiding our kitchen cupboards, resource guarding his food and the sofa and tuned him over the year into a completely different dog, he’s 48kg so a force to be reconned with at times😭
We started living separately in house, and swapping dogs about, Casey wasn’t allowed in the same room as the collies as he was so unpredictable, luckily we have two living rooms so he had his own but myself and Ryan became very stressed having to mange him as we board dogs too, Ryan worked away, so weekends he would come home and it was very stressful and just felt we was losing what home felt like💔
Over the 8 months, I tried Casey on every skin itch relief tablet, supplement, you name it! Nothing worked except steroids 😭
The vets didn’t recommend raw, but Jayne from the rescue did, but why would raw meat change his feet? Stop his skin from itching? Stop him pulling his skin off? Raw won’t do that!? Will it?
So I switched to a raw diet -
The change wasn’t over night and the next couple of weeks I cried so much, as I took him off his steroids too so seeing him going at his feet again was heart breaking BUT the raw started to heal his gut, the itching reduced, the chewing his feet stopped and his skin and coat improved massively.
Why does healing the gut help?
