🌡🐾☀️ HEAT STROKE ☀️🐾🌡

With these hotter temperatures it is important to remember that heat stroke can be fatal.

Signs of heatstroke include:
- Heavy panting
- Dark gums or tongue
- Excessive salivation
- Weakness, lethargy, collapse
- Seizures

❌️ Please do not walk dogs in the middle of the day. Only go for walks in the cooler mornings or late evenings. Avoid pavements - if the ground is too hot to touch for a few seconds, it is too hot for paws ❌️

Remember that it isn't just dogs that can suffer from heat stroke - this applies to cats and small furries too!

Ensure fresh drinking water and shaded, cool areas are avaliable for your pet.

Provide cool mats and frozen treats for mental stimulation. Photo below is of gorgeous Bernie enjoying a frozen Lick-E-Lix!

If you think your pet is suffering from heat stroke, call us immediately on 01472 357430.

⚠️ NEW RULES FOR EU PET PASSPORTS ⚠️

From today, there are new rules for travelling with your pets. Previously, if you were travelling with your pet (dog, cat or ferret) from Great Britain (GB) to the European Union (EU), you required an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for each journey UNLESS you had a valid EU pet passport issued in a EU country.

Going forward, if you are a GB resident, EU passports (even if they are currently valid) will no longer be accepted by the EU and you will require an AHC. Only EU residents will be able to use EU pet passports.

A valid microchip and a rabies vaccination (administered at least 21 days before travel destination dependant) are also required, with some countries requiring worming treatment prior to entry so please be sure to check for any specific requirements with the APHA prior to travel.

A new AHC is required for every trip and are can only be issued within 10 days of travel so being organised is essential.

For further information on this, please visit the gov.uk website and find out more from the APHA guidelines.

🐶🐾⭐️ STAR PATIENT ⭐️🐾🐶

Meet Travis, one of our regular patients.

Every four weeks, Travis travels to us in style for his monthly injection visits. These injections are part of an important treatment plan to ensure he is happy and comfortable.

We always enjoy seeing this lovely boy, who never fails to put a smile on our faces each month!

🌼🌷🌱 SPRING TIME 🌱🌷🌼

Today was the first day of Spring! Just a reminder that many Spring bulbs are harmful to pets, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive drooling, disorientation and even heart problems. These toxic bulbs include:

- Daffodils
- Lilies
- Tulips
- Bluebells
- Hyacinths
- Narcissus

It’s always safest to avoid planting these flowers in your garden or having them in your home.

If you suspect your pet has eaten a toxic bulb or plant, contact us on 01472 357430 or, if we’re closed, the out of hours service on 01507 304550 immediately.

🌼🐾🌸 HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY 🌸🐾🌼
.. to all of you lovely pet Mums! Whilst you're enjoying your well-deserved treats, don't forget that some of these may be toxic to pets.

🍫 Chocolate is poisonous to cats, dogs and rabbits. It contains a chemical called theobromine which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and in worst case scenarios, seizures, internal bleeding and even heart attacks.

🌷 Flowers such as lillies, daffodils and tulips are toxic to cats. Even small amounts of these flowers can cause organ failure if ingested.

🍭 Xylitol, which is in some sugar-free sweets, can cause dangerously low blood sugar levels and liver failure.

If your pet does eat any of these toxins, call our out of hours provider on 01507 304550 for advice. Knowing what they have eaten and how much has been consumed will help them give you the best advice.

❤️🌍🐾 WORLD KIDNEY DAY 🐾🌍❤️

Did you know that 20-50% of cats over the age of 15 years old have some degree of chronic kidney disease? This makes it one of the most common conditions in older cats.

Signs of chronic kidney disease in cats include:

- Poor appetite
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Weight loss
- Lethargy

It is recommended that older cats have vet checks once or twice a year to help detect the signs of chronic kidney disease. Early intervention can help slow the progression of the disease and improve your cat’s quality of life.

For further information or advice regarding chronic kidney disease, contact us on 01472 357430.

🐶🐾⭐️ STAR PATIENT ⭐️🐾🐶

Earlier this year, Reggie spent the day hospitalised with us as he wasn’t feeling his best self.

He brought his toy Santa along with him for comfort and was extremely brave for his blood tests.

All the staff made sure he got plenty of love and cuddles throughout the day.

We’re all so glad you’re back to your normal self, Reggie!

❤️🌍🐾 WORLD SPAY DAY 🐾🌍❤️

World Spay Day is a global campaign that promotes the neutering of pets and stray animals to help reduce over-population and prevent animal homelessness.

Not only is neutering responsible, it can also help keep pets healthy and happy. Some benefits of neutering include:

- Eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra).

- Can prevent mammary, uterine and ovarian cancers.

- Reduces chances of testicular cancer and prostate problems.

- Decreases the risk of certain hormone-related diseases.

- Can prevent some behaviours (such as “marking” their territory).

Here is of one of our patient’s, Trixie, looking super cute after her spay surgery.

For further information or advice regarding neutering, contact us on 01472 357430.
