Saying hello again for anyone new to Nathan's Happy Hounds, I'm nathanial my journey started in training my companion dog to an active assistance dog. Ever since I've loved training:
Working on the dog and handlers bond. The joy of getting a fast sussessful recall or the exhilaration of assistance training and the task has been proofed and put into action! 🐕‍🦺🎉
These are some of the things that I love about training dogs, from setting puppies up for a future of fun and engaged with you, to training rambunctious adolescents. Comment or message to find out how to start your training journey for your dog.

Now looking back at the video now she was watching for the release cue while I looked out the window! I'm glad I keep working on her impulse control.

My turning point was seeing a therapy dog come to work where I was placed at the time. Seeing the effect this amazing dog working had was astonishing. I was always interested in psychology and behaviour, after high-school I went to UWS paisley to study, but in my second year my own mental health went downhill.
During this I did have to stop studies. After a bit I went with someone who was looking for a puppy, I went with them to get a pup what I didn't expect was a puppy walking up to where I was and it was like she knew.
I may not have planned on getting a puppy that day, but I wouldn't change a thing. At first I used what I knew about psychology and behavior to help me train, secure attachment theory was very helpful for us making sure she's happy and comfortable that mutual trust and relationship is very important.
Then I remembered that therapy dog that for its job done for many what my dog did for me; hope, non-judgemental support and even just being there. This made me want to learn more about dog training. I realised I wanted to train for happy dogs and people and I got my DTCP training certification and since my ongoing continuing professional development. Currently working to pass ‘Assistant dog specialist programme’
I know I wouldn't be where I am if I hadn't gotten that little pup that walked up to me all those years ago.

This was deeper than I tend to go, so here's a picture of her being a cute derp.

The heat wave has died down for now, time for gingers like my dog and myself to come back out from our shaded fan filled area.
It's been hell of a time, avoiding the heat with recent weather, being careful with the tarmac's temperature. I feel like I'm often talking about this, and I hope that's true as it's very important. As the heat leads not just to paw burns, but also the danger of heat stroke.
Little things like walking some time after the sun has set, before the sun rises. Being sure too feel the tarmac gives a great sense of the temperature and if its warm you know to stick to shade, be quick and avoid the warm spots.
A bottle of water as well as drinking this can be poured on their paws for example to help cool them before getting home to lie with the fan or the lucky Hounds with air conditioning. Be sure they have a bowl of fresh water.

This tip will save you money‼️
Build trust between dog and owner
Sounds great, am I right? 🥳
We don't want to be chasing after the dog, we also don't want the vet visit of an injured paw now sometimes that is what needs to be done but here's a trick to minimise these injuries: as well as checking for the annoying grass seeds and other debris they've picked up, we give them choice. At first this might sound weird, what I mean is not just looking at body language; but teaching them that if they walk away we let them. This is a strong trust building action, this is us showing the dog not only we understand but we're listening too. After some training even paw shy dogs will let you check.
Personally I like this as it is much easier for me to identify any injuries quickly as we've worked together at this for years, so if she is liking and hesitant to let me check, I can check the severity and take it from there. Sometimes it's as simple as she's managed to capture a garden pebble with her toe beans, for when it's more severe this training is also helpful both at and for the vets.

something I don't usually talk to much but it's part of my journey to dog training: When I started learning to become a dog trainer, it was to help streamline my assistant dogs behaviour. While doing this I realised that it became a passion and that I'd love to be able to help people whether it's to train deep pressure therapy or loose leash walking. It became a joy and Delvok is a great assistance dog and has in many ways changed my life as well. Some of the things she does and understands is amazing and leads me to constantly be rethinking about all dogs. This is her this morning working, I should have listened to the first sound; thats my fault, at first I thought it was a morning yawn but her back up choice got me reacting right away.

Shoulder sore after a walk? Embarrassed or sore from being pulled from hedge to pole? Tired of fighting your surroundings for your dogs attention? Even just short on time but want some better walking etiquette?

Coached training walks may be the answer. Much like 1-1 training, but I work with your dogs walk time, so you don't have to set aside precious time each week for a session, message and training walks don't have to be a different time than your dogs usual walking time, coaching hours are flexible this also helps the dog as it keeps their routine. DM to book in or for further enquiries on training 1-1 and training walks.

Comment your biggest walk challenges and get in touch and we can book a discovery call and start a journey for a happier hound and walk at both sides of the lead.

Good morning everyone, that warm time of year is coming and I agree it already feels like it's here. What that tells me is not only will I do my usual hot weather checks, I want to share that into a list so others can use this. Dogs can't sweat through the heat like we do. And if the human side of the lead is hot then we really should be thinking about the dog.
📌 I'll touch my hand to any dark surfaces outside as these can burn paw pads.
📌 Make sure you have some extra water for the dog, even for a little walk
📌 I want to keep an eye on their breathing, thats how they cool down and if they're too hot usually red eyed and drewly panting. it can lead to a horrible vet visit, the water can help keep them cool
📌 Stick to the shade, some of us might want a tan, but let's not let our dogs do that
📌 when back from the walk there's some key things looking for at this time of year ▪️Check all over for ticks ▪️ check for wild seeds, these can get between the toes as well as in the fur ▪️check for burns on their paws, from the tarmac
Really important thing I learned not too long is AstroTurf can get as hot if not hotter than tarmac!
Another thing for me is co-operative care, stay tuned for some videos on that, even if you don't know what it is and want to learn or you just want more methods, that's what's coming up. Stay safe and cool out there
