Firstly, please let me know if you haven’t booked in for the rest of the year as I believe I have got through everyone! Jan-June 2026 dates will be available to book from October.

Now.. big news!!
You may have noticed the new logo 😃
I have rebranded Bathtime Paws. I’ve wanted to do it for a while and it just feels like the right time. Many of you know about my beloved soul dog who passed last year. I wanted to honour him in my business name so I’m proud to announce that Bathtime Paws is now trading under its new name... ā€˜Harleys Hounds’

So, to celebrate the new name, I’ve decided to open up my books & offer some deals to you all! 🤩
These deals will be only available for a short while as I don’t have many spaces to offer, so grab them while you can!!
If you know someone looking for a groomer, I would be so grateful for the recommendation. Please note my weight limit for dogs is 20kg šŸ«¶šŸ»

Refer a friend:
* £5 each off your next appointment

* £5 off your next appointment

Teeth:
* New teeth cleaning clients get £5 off (will be £35 for initial session. SO worth it as vet dentals are usually around £600!)
* All clients can get a further Ā£10 off when you buy a package of 5 teeth cleans (works out Ā£90 for 5 sessions - that’s less than Ā£20 per session! 🤩)

I’ve had fantastic results with teeth cleaning & It’s really important for your dogs health that they have a plaque free mouth as this severe buildup can affect their organs 🐶
If you’d like more info on this service and what it’s all about, pop me a message 😁

I’m constantly being asked how much for a groom. While I believe this is a legitimate question unfortunately it’s not as easy to answer and it shouldn’t be the key to finding the best fitting groomer for your dog.

My grooms are based on individual dogs and their lifestyle, it’s not a 1 price fits all grooms/dogs from the same breed. So I require extra information than a ā€˜how much to groom my dog’ question.
What breed?
Coat type?
What style?
How old?
Behaviour?
How much brushing do you do?
What kind of walks do you go on?
Do they like brooks/water?
Do they have skin issues/allergies?

It’s also not about price, it’s about the time and effort we put into building a solid relationship of trust, it’s about the amount of training and regular refresher training we carry out, it’s about the equipment we use, the maintenance we pay for on said equipment, it’s about the extras we offer alongside the full groom (inbetween care) it’s about the advice we give for free, it’s about the out of hours care we give, it’s about the knowledge we hold, it’s about the behaviour training we’ve carried out, it’s about the care we give before, during and after the groom, it’s about the security we offer, it’s about the ear and shoulder we offer at the door, it’s about the health changes we notice since the last groom and the lives we’ve saved by a simple vet app suggestion, it’s about the out of hours worry we hold and the check in texts we send, it’s about getting to know your dog and knowing how much they can tolerate, it’s about a full service including behind the scenes.

So when you are looking for a new groomer please think about why and what you want for you and your dog, not about getting the cheapest groom.

We need our dogs to growl so we know when they are close to their limit. That they really need us to listen and things are getting serious.

They are never a warning we should seek to remove but one we should be glad to hear. Because that’s what’s going to prevent things from escalating further.

Why Is "My Friendly Dog" barking and acting so aggressively on a lead towards other dogs?

Frustrated greeters—a super common and very misunderstood behavior, that unfortunately I am seeing more and more of, especially in young dogs. (Ive had 2 discovery calls about this just today)

These are the dogs who love other dogs, but when they see one on a walk, they bark, lunge, or pull like crazy. It looks like aggression, but it’s not.

All they want to do is to say hi—but the lead says ā€œno.ā€
And that creates frustration.

This is especially common in dogs who:
- Didn’t get consistent socialization (hello, pandemic pups!)
- Are naturally excitable or social
- Have been incouraged to greet on lead in the past
- Have never taught impulse control

If your walks feel stressful because of this behavior, you’re not alone—and your dog isn’t ā€œbad.ā€ They’re just overwhelmed and need some help managing their big feelings.

Due to so many places now offering free for all puppy play parties, dogs are rehearsing explosive greetings — so charging into other dogs full speed has becomes the norm for them

Arousal levels stays high — there’s no decompression or downtime.

There are no regulation in learning — dogs don’t practice calming themselves or disengaging voluntarily.

Overarousal gets reinforced — intense behaviors (barking, body slamming, vocalizing) often lead to access or continued play

When they're regularly exposed to chaotic play where ā€œsee dog = GO GO GO!ā€, they learn that the only way to interact is to get hyped and push through. Then, when they’re not allowed to greet (e.g., on a lead walk), they melt down — barking, lunging, and vocalizing, because they haven’t learned how to regulate that excitement.

The good news though - It’s 100% trainable.

With positive reinforcement, we can teach your dog that calm behavior works, and excitement doesn’t have to explode into chaos. We use science-backed, force-free techniques to help them develop focus, patience, and confidence.

Dental disease leads to chronic pain. It’s hidden (until they breathe on us!) so we tend not to think about it as much as say arthritis, where we see the dog or cat struggle to move.

It’s important to reduce plaque to prevent tartar. A blob of appropriate tooth paste into the mouth, chewing, products in food and water to reduce plaque, and brushing if possible will all help tremendously!

If you’d like to learn more about your pet’s mouth or those you care for, then my course oral and dental health in dogs and cats would be great for you! You’ll learn so much about the mouth!

Matted fur it hurts right? Yep it does imagine your hair held tightly back for a period of time.

Yes these matts do so much damage beyond beauty. They restrict blood supply to the skin. That hurts and that means when they are removed a massive blood supply whooshes rushes to the area. Thank goodness that skin says, I have feeling. But on the ears especially you may get blood dripping from the ears. No one cut your dog, someone released your dogs discomfort

Terminology Tuesday ~ Ladder of Canine Aggression

Understanding your dog’s body language is key to preventing bites before behaviors escalate!

The Canine Ladder of Aggression (created by Kendal Shepherd) shows how dogs signal discomfort long before they ever growl or bite.

Recognizing the early signs—like turning their head, yawning, or walking away—can help keep everyone safe and stress-free!

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on how pain can impact our dog’s behavior!

WHAT YOU DON'T SEE AT THE DOG GROOMERS.......
You dropped your dog off at the salon and picked them up few hours later - fluffy, fresh, and happy. But what you saw was just the tip of the iceberg.

You didn’t see your groomer arrive early to open up the salon, disinfect tools, lay out fresh towels, and check the day’s appointments. You didn’t see them look over your dog from nose to tail before even lifting a brush - checking the coat condition, skin, eyes, ears, nails, and weight.

You didn’t see the careful way they clipped around a wriggly paw, or how they paused to let your dog calm down during the bath. You didn’t notice the matting hidden beneath your dog’s topcoat, or the way the groomer worked slowly to avoid hurting the skin beneath it.

You weren’t there when they spotted a red patch of irritated skin, or a small lump you hadn’t noticed. You heard them gently mention it to you at collection - not to worry you, but because they genuinely care about your dog’s wellbeing.

And after you left, you didn’t see the clean-down , the floor swept, tables cleaned, blades oiled, messages replied to, notes written up for your next visit, and laundry on again.

All of that… for a price that’s often lower than what you’d pay for your own haircut. And your hairdresser?
They don’t have to bathe you, clip your nails, or hold you still while you try to bite the brush.

The truth is ……. dog grooming is so much more than a haircut.

It’s about health, hygiene, comfort, and trust. It’s about knowing dog anatomy, coat types, skin conditions, behaviour management, handling skills, and safe sc******ng techniques. It’s a profession that takes training, practice, and patience.
Most groomers got into this work because they love dogs. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be paid fairly for the physical, emotional, and skilled work they do every single day.

If your dog leaves their groomer happy, healthy and looking good - it’s not by luck. It’s because you have got a good groomer.
So next time, take a moment to thank them. Leave a review.

Tip them if you can. And above all - don’t undervalue them.
They’re doing far more than just washing the dog.
