Stop Complaining, Start Changing
The recent announcements regarding Gravesend’s Hatch Market have brought out all the usual Facebook posts - the constant complaining about how our town is "going downhill" or "not what it used to be." It's easy to sit on the sidelines and point fingers. But if you genuinely want to see positive change, you need to do more than just complain.
It's time to get off the bench and start elevating the place you call home. It's time to stop being a Facebook naysayer and support where you live.
Let’s be real for a moment.
Gravesend isn’t Oxford, York or Bath. It isn’t Brighton or even Whitstable. It’s not a university town with an annual influx of student energy and parental spend. Neither is it a significant tourist destination with daily coach parties and the disposable income that brings.
Gravesend shares the same woes of most British towns; Decades of government inflicted cuts and austerity, underfunded local authorities struggling to deliver mandatory public services, out of town shopping malls and online retailers decimating our local shopping opportunities.
No-one is in denial of these facts.
So let’s not waste time and energy on what it isn’t and focus on what it is.
Gravesend is a unique estuary town with a rich history of embracing new communities with open arms. Diversity and opportunity are the hallmarks of our community, a tapestry of cultures, backgrounds, and resilience. Our town is truly a special place, made up of incredible individuals who are committed to making a difference. Each day - if your mind is open to it - you can witness the generosity, kindness, and unwavering spirit that define our community.
If you’re the kind of person who thrives on negativity then your hastily written words hurt the endeavours of everyone trying to shape and grow Gravesend. With AI trawling the internet and throwing back it’s findings your collective soundbites become part of the bigger picture. Imagine for a moment if a major retailer or business investor casually searched the question “should I consider Gravesend as an opportunity?”.
Complaining and criticism does nothing to make our town a better place. In fact, it only serves to paint an unfairly bleak picture for those who don't know any better.
There are many amazing people in our town trying to turn the tide with innovation and entrepreneurship Iron Pier Beer Vegan Antics House of Leyla Core. Reformer Pilates Basement Bakehouse The Panic Room - Gravesend Future Survival Events The Mole Hole Micro Pub
And creatives embracing the DIY ethos to put Gravesend on the cultural map St George's Arts Centre Holy Moly Spoken Word Gravy Girls Blueprint Arts The Wonky Potter
Get behind these good souls together with all the 100s of other business owners working day in day out and breathe new life into your community.
