Snuffle mats are such a helpful tool for nervous dogs. I'm looking after a lab just now and when I first took her home she was so skittish and just petrified of everything. I spent some evenings outside with her dinner on a snuffle mat for her to watch the world go by. When I took her to my weekend job at a sanctuary she ate while she got used to all the animals and its helped her confidence so much to not panic anytime something moved or made a sound near her. Now she wanders about pretty unphased by everything and I put it down to the time she had to snuffle her worries away 😊
Its a calming activity that tires them out, letting them use natural skills to earn rewards which when paired with stressful situations can help them begin to assosiate good feelings with the places/sounds/actions they were worried about before. Great for overseas rescue dogs to help them relax a little bit in their new homes, giving them a calm activty to do.Great for getting dogs used to things like grooming/brushing/waiting in their crate or making the car a nicer place to be.

Just wanted to come on and talk about a concern that has been voiced recently about horses eating the fabric on my snuffle mats.

Below are 2 videos
- the first is a young mare, Moon. She bites down in attempt to get the treats once or twice then begins to use her lips more. This is a result of frustration. She was learning how to use it, and was trying to work out the easiest way to get the treats and eventually learned it was easier to snuffle than to grab the treats. (You have to teach them how to use it in most cases, which I have a set of step by step instructions if your struggling!)

-the second is a mare called lady. She's a much more mellow horse and on her first try she was able to calmly hoover up grated carrots and herbs.

I always reccomend to use large treats right on top first, and observing how your horse uses their mat, to slowly integrate smaller treats and hiding them further down. Every horse is different and multiple factors determine how they will use the mat initially. If their hungry, their going to be desperate to get the food and so are more likely to bite, shake it around or kick it. You can prevent this by feeding a portion of hay or forage first and introducing as as above.

Snuffle mats are an enrichment tool for horses as opposed to a slow feeder as they are for dogs. I've sold over 70 mats and never had anyone say their animal has tried to ingest the fabric. It is tied on tightly and for an animal- not easy to undo the knots. Generally animals are quite clever and a quite aware what is edible and what is not! Not saying it cannot happen, but I always advise against leaving unattended so aslong as you keep an eye on them and inspect your mat for loose pieces before use, your animals are quite safe using my products 😊

📢 I have decided to cut back on the production of snuffle mats over the next few months, as I'm training to be a dog groomer, I'll be busy! I will still be accommodating orders however I will be using only the fabric I have in stock already and not making any L/XL mats for a while as I feel I need to think about price increase due to the strain they put on my hands and wrists.

If your desperate for a big one, pm me and I'll see what I can do, however they also take up much more fabric and so you may have to mix and match colours that mabye don't go as well together. Just order as normal but please understand the colour choices are limited and I may ask you to pick an extra colour to add in incase I run out of the ones you picked. 📢

Big lucky who doesn't get treats very often wasn't quite sure what to do with his snuffle mat! 😂 he was helping me film a "how not to" for you guys 😉! I have a set of step by steps for you if you feel your horse would just do this! You can indeed teach them how to use it 🥰
