This one is important!

‘Listen to their whisper so they don’t have to shout’👂🙉

A couple of weeks ago Doris and I (A very amateur wannabe Eventer) had a relatively disasterous trip out to Norton Disney - I was struggling with balancing our canter in the dressage and had 3 stops and a pole showjumping. Our entire round was very stuffy, and whilst my riding definitely left much room for improvement, my wonderful pony who usually will help me out of a sticky spot, just didn’t want to go.

Fortunately, I already had a saddle fitting booked for later that week, due to suspicions that it might need some adjustments making. Andy from from S Milner and Son was a great help (as always!), confirming my thoughts, and making the changes needed to accommodate for Doris’ ‘summer body’.😳🤪

I want to stress that this appointment was not at all overdue! The saddle had been fitted 3 months previously at which point it fitted beautifully.

I’m pleased to say that since these changes (and a full treatment from me), Doris has been feeling amazing this week, and was back on top form today at a local showjumping competition. She flew round both rounds much more enthusiastically, going clear and we took home 🥈 and 🥉- a very big achievement for me!

I wanted to share this with everyone, as it just goes to show how important it is to notice the little changes in behaviour and to have a good team of equine professionals around you (dentist, farrier, physio, saddle fitter, vet etc!). Keep up to date with your appointments and discuss with them any changes in behaviour, movement and performance. They may well be able to help you and your horse to feel and perform at their best! 🌟

We are so fortunate to be able to call these wonderful creatures our teammates, and we owe it to them to listen well and to do our best to make sure they’re as comfortable as they can be in every aspect. When they give us their all in return, it is so worth it in every way!🥰

Anyway, I’m ready for a drink and a bbq after a very successful day. Happy Sunday All! 🥂

Stella (who is nearly 16 years old!!!) brought along her support crew for her physio/hydro session today! Her sisters also did some great work in the tank and everyone left very happy and hopefully tired enough to give their mum a peaceful evening! They all love their sessions and bicker about who gets to go in the tank first! Well done team! 🐶🐾

It’s been a tough few weeks here at Stretch and Flex with the loss of quite a few of our most longstanding clients. 💔 🕊️

Sending so much love to all the families of the special pets whom have had to take a trip over the rainbow bridge, both recently and over the years, and I hope you can remember all the happy memories you shared together with a smile.

As you all very well know, I fall in love with each and every one of my wonderful patients. I invest my whole heart into helping them live their best life, but this makes it absolutely devastating when we have to say goodbye, and this part of my job never gets any easier.

I wanted to share this message with you all as it rings so true for our dogs and other pets and highlights just how special they are!❤️

I remember each and every one of the wonderful furry friends I have treated and think of them often running around in the stars and having fun, but miss them all very much!✨

Thank you Little Loxley Lettering for the beautiful design and the 6 year old boy whom shared this wonderful and accurate message with us all! 🙏💔

Tip 2 - Maintaining a Healthy Body Condition Score.

Studies show that successful weight loss in obese dogs significantly improves their quality of life and can reduce lameness. Scientific evidence has shown that clinical signs can improve following as little as 6% weight loss from an obese dog.

To determine whether or not your dog could benefit from the fantastic benefits that weight loss can offer, you need to be able to assess their body condition effectively.

Body CondiRoyal Caning is the skill of assessing your dogs body condition, based on a number of criteria and scoring it accordingly. Royal Canin have recently provided me a with a number of charts designed for different sizes/breeds of dog, to help guide owners in assessing condition.
They have also kindly provided some posters which are very informative for clients visiting the clinic.

A healthy condition for a dog is between a 4 and 5 out of 9. If your dog is already sitting here, then well done - your dog is already benefitting, and remember to focus your attentions on keeping it that way. If your dog is a 6 or above, there are some positive changes that need to be made to promote longevity in your dog and/or to see the health and mobility benefits that weight loss can achieve.

Regarding diet, although I can’t advise on what changes need to be made to your dog’s diet, I always advise that recording everything your dog eats on a daily basis is a very good place to start. It is through doing this that you can begin to understand the amount of calories your dog is consuming on a daily basis, and therefore can make a plan of how this can be reduced.

Most vet practices offer a weight management clinic, usually ran by nurses whom are very experienced in nutrition. They will be thrilled to be able to assist with your dog’s weight loss journey and unlock the benefits that a healthy body condition can achieve.

It is very important that all changes made are healthily and safely so I would always recommend speaking to an experienced and qualified nutritionist/nurse as a first port of call before making any drastic changes to your dogs diet.

Making changes to our dogs’ diets can be very challenging, but can be so worth it when you see the positive effects on your dogs’ health. I have met so many dogs who have experienced first hand the wonderful effects of weight loss and it has not only helped their current mobility and comfort, but also their longevity and also provided many other health benefits moving forwards. The owners often wish they had acted sooner.
Let’s keep our furry friends living their best lives for as long as we can - they will thank us for it!🐾

Although we are lucky enough to be able to offer a wide range of treatment types in our appointments, the treatment for your dog doesn’t stop when you walk out the door.

Initial appointments always include formation of a comprehensive home management plan tailored to you and your dog based on the initial assessment carried out. This plan will include management changes for in and around the home, and if appropriate, also targeted exercises that can be carried out regularly by yourself to help your dogs progress. This is all presented beautifully via the Equicantis platform and emailed over to you following the appointment (with videos included to demonstrate!). 🥰📹🎥

Over the coming weeks I plan to post about some of the management changes that many of my paw-rents 🐾 have made to assist their dogs - stay tuned for some tips. 💡

Please keep in mind that the changes discussed in posts have been tailored to each case and may not be appropriate for you and your dog. If you would like to discuss a plan for your dog please don’t hesitate to give us a call. 📞 Even if regular physiotherapy isn’t an option for you and your dog, please don’t let that put you off getting in touch. Quite often a single appointment, with some guidance regarding management, can make a big difference for your dog and we will try to help wherever we can!

This is Bill, a gorgeous boy who struggles with osteoarthritis. Here he is modelling his car ramp which his owner’s diligently use for each of his car journeys to protect his joints from unnecessary forces when jumping in and out of the car. This is just one of the many management changes Bill’s owners have made to help manage his osteoarthritis. Stay tuned for more handy management tips. 🐶

That’s us all done and dusted for easter - Rosie is exhausted from all the hard work. We are back to normal on Tuesday 22nd April so in the meantime have a great Easter. I read some great advice on a post yesterday reminding us to eat all the chocolate so that there is none left for the dogs to steal - and I intend to follow this guidance 🍫🪺🐣
