This was a difficult delivery involving a large puppy in posterior presentation.

Despite strong contractions, there was no progress, so I carefully assisted using the Woods manoeuvre to rotate and ease the puppy through. He was born alive and well, and mum made a full recovery.

I’ve hesitated about sharing this because real whelping footage can be intense — but it’s important for breeders to see what can happen and how to stay calm and prepared.

If you’re new to breeding, moments like this are why learning as much as possible before whelping day is so crucial. My breeder workshops and digital resources are designed to help you prepare — DM me for more details.

Respectful discussion is welcome — unkind comments will be removed.

Wondering if your female has finished whelping?
In this video, I demonstrate two gentle abdominal palpation techniques to check for any remaining puppies. A full-term pup is easy to feel — firm and well-defined against softer tissue.

If you’re ever unsure, or she’s restless or straining, I recommend an ultrasound scan to be certain.

What All Breeder’s Need To Know About Caesarean Sections
Not all caesareans are performed the same way — and the surgical technique your vet chooses can affect your dog’s recovery, future fertility, and even your breeding program.

In this video, I explain the two main techniques used in canine C-sections, including:
• How each method is performed
• The pros and cons for breeders
• What to discuss with your vet before surgery

As a breeder, understanding the difference between these techniques can help you make informed decisions and advocate for the safest option for your girl and her puppies.

Here are 3 essential tools I always have on hand for every whelping. They’re simple, affordable, and can make a big difference when seconds count. Tool 2—dental floss for tying off umbilical cords—is something I use before mum has a chance to over-chew (I’ve got a full how-to video on my YouTube channel).

If you’re preparing for an upcoming litter, these are great tools to keep in your whelping kit 🐾

Cloth puppy. Wobbly stool. Real advice. Zero dignity. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Just your average day……standing on a stool, on a call, using a microfibre cloth as a stand-in puppy to demonstrate how to clear birthing fluids from the airway 😅

When a breeder needs help, you grab whatever’s closest and get to work!
It might not be glamorous, but if it helps, it’s worth it 🐾💨

Second stage labour in dogs — what should it actually look like?

When I teach new breeders, one of the most common worries is:
“Will I know when my female is really in labour?”

In this video, I share real, clear footage of one of my Rhodesian Ridgeback girls in active second stage labour. You’ll see exactly what strong abdominal contractions look like — and I’ll explain how labour progresses, how to support your girl, and when to get veterinary help.

✅ What to expect as labour moves from stage 1 to stage 2
✅ Signs that contractions are productive — and when they’re not
✅ My go-to rule: 30 minutes of strong contractions with no puppy = call your vet
✅ Why hydration before and during labour matters for colostrum and stamina

Want more help?
I’ve put together a detailed Whelping Guide that covers every stage of labour — from first signs to safe delivery. Available from my website https://granthambreederservices.co.uk/shop/

Support your female. Protect your litter. Know when to act.
