Schooling Liveries Success at Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre

🐎Merlin-
Merlin came to us to improve his confidence both within the arena environment and over fences. Throughout his schooling period, he was exposed to a variety of exercises designed to develop more trust in his rider, improve his understanding of ridden aids, and build his confidence over different types of fences. Consistent, progressive training allowed Merlin to become more settled and willing in the arena, showing increased all round confidence. By the end of his stay, he demonstrated a more confident mindset towards schooling and was more relaxed and assured in his work.

🐎Rum-
Rum arrived as a nappy pony whose behaviour was limiting his young rider's ability to enjoy and participate in local competitions. The focus of his schooling programme was to establish consistent manners under saddle, improve responsiveness to rider aids, and encourage a willing attitude towards work. Through patient and structured training, Rum learned to move forward willingly, became more attentive to his rider, and developed better overall behaviour in a variety of situations. Significant progress was made in reducing napping tendencies, resulting in a more reliable and enjoyable pony suitable for his young rider to enjoy with increased confidence.

🐎GP-
GP came without any existing behavioural concerns but required additional education for his young rider to feel confident and be a quiet and safe pony. Particular emphasis was placed on traffic training making sure he was patient waiting for vehicles, as well being sensible and controllable in open spaces. GP was exposed to a range of traffic situations and hacking environments, showing his ability to keep a relaxed and sensible attitude. Throughout his schooling, he was willing and straightforward on the flat and over fences, showing an excellent attitude to be a safe and trustworthy pony in the arena as well as hacking both on roads and in open countryside.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of the owners so far who have entrusted us with their horses on our new additional venture during their schooling livery stay at Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre. It is a privilege to work with each horse as an individual, helping them progress in their training, confidence, and overall way of going. Seeing the improvements they make during their time with us is incredibly rewarding, and nothing means more to us than receiving positive feedback from happy owners who can continue to enjoy their horses at home.
We take great pride in providing a professional, supportive, and tailored approach to every horse that comes through our yard, and we are always delighted to see both horse and rider benefit from the training received.
If you would like to discuss our schooling livery services, current availability, or whether a tailored training programme could benefit your horse, please do not hesitate to get in touch for a friendly chat. We are always happy to answer any questions and provide further information about what we can offer.
In addition to our schooling livery packages, we also offer holiday livery schooling. This service is ideal if you are going away and would like the peace of mind of knowing your horse is being professionally cared for, exercised, and kept in work while you are away. Whether your horse requires ongoing schooling, fitness work, or simply quality daily care and riding, we can ensure they receive the highest standard of attention throughout their stay with us.

We are also open to sales livery services for owners looking for a professional, stress-free approach to selling their horse. From preparing and presenting your horse at its best, to handling enquiries and viewings, we can manage the process on your behalf, giving you complete peace of mind. Our aim is to showcase each horse's strengths and find them the most suitable new home, making the selling experience as straightforward and hassle-free as possible for both horse and owner.

🐎 Is It Training… Or Is It the Bit? 🐎

Many ridden issues are often assumed to be schooling problems — but sometimes the root cause is discomfort.

A horse cannot soften into a contact that doesn’t feel comfortable.

🪢 What Happens During a Bit Fitting?

Every horse’s mouth is unique. During a consultation I assess:

• Oral conformation (tongue size, bar shape, palate height)
• Symmetry of the mouth and jaw
• Current bit size, type and thickness
• Bridle fit and positioning
• The horse’s way of going under saddle

The goal is not to “control” the horse — it’s to create comfort, clarity and relaxation in the contact.

When a bit is correctly fitted, you often see:
✔ Quieter mouth
✔ Softer jaw
✔ More consistent contact
✔ Improved straightness
✔ A more willing, relaxed way of going

🎓 Why Coaching Matters Alongside Bit Fitting

Even the best bit cannot compensate for rider imbalance.

As a BHS Level 3 Coach, I help riders develop:
• A balanced, independent seat
• Effective, sympathetic hands
• Better understanding of biomechanics
• Clear, consistent aids

True improvement comes when correct equipment and correct riding work together.

If your horse is:
– Tossing their head
– Fixing or leaning
– Opening the mouth
– Evading the contact
– Or just not feeling quite right

It’s worth investigating comfort before assuming disobedience.
