We’re delighted to welcome Celina, Vet Surgeon, to the Archway Team! ✨

Originally from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Celina studied Veterinary Medicine at the University of Liverpool and completed multiple student placements with us during 2023 & 2024. She has since completed an Equine Internship at Oakhill Veterinary Centre, where she developed her particular interest in equine orthopaedics, alongside a growing interest in rabbit medicine 🐇

Many of you may already have met Celina during her placements, but we’d love you all to join us in giving her a warm welcome back – this time as a fully qualified member of our veterinary team 🌟

Cartmel Show 2025 - what a day! ☀️

By far our busiest year yet – with the help of you all, we delivered over 250 foals 🐴, bandaged up lots of poorly toy pets 🐾, and our whole team (including our vets!) painted endless faces 🎨 – from frogs and snakes to butterflies and even unicorns! We’re so grateful to everyone who stopped by to enjoy our stand.

We didn’t manage to capture many photos or videos ourselves but here’s a little glimpse…
👉 If you came along, we’d love to see your snaps – please share them with us!

A huge thank you to everyone who visited, and of course to our amazing team both at the show and back at the practice for keeping everything running smoothly.

Strangles Prevention.

Following the recent confirmation of a case in our area it is worth a reminder about the measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of horses picking up and spreading the disease.

Strangles is spread primarily through direct contact between horses or indirectly on the hands and clothes of people or equipment passing between horses.

Taking your horse's temperature twice daily can be an effective way of screening, if you suspect your horse may have been at risk of contact - the normal temperature of a horse is around 37oC / 99oF - above 38.5oC / 101oF is suspect and the horse should be isolated from other horses and monitored for development of clinical symptoms, which would usually become apparent within a few days.

In addition to an increase in temperature, horses infected with strangles usually become dull and depressed, go off their food, develop a nasal discharge (pus), a cough and develop swellings under the jaw line which abscess and burst. The pus from nasal discharge and abscesses is infectious to other horses. Confirmation of the infection is by swabs of the pus.

Washing hands and changing clothes, and disinfecting any equipment between horses reduces the risk of transmitting the disease from horse to horse. Horses with clinical signs should be immediately isolated and movement of people and equipment from infected / suspect horses to non-infected horses prevented.

It is a good idea to quarantine horses coming onto yards from contact with others for at least two weeks to reduce the chance of introducing infection onto yards. There is a blood test for the antibodies that develop in response to strangles which can be useful in screening - however a negative blood test does not rule out recent exposure as it takes time for the horse's immune system to mount a response.

Horses can also be vaccinated against strangles.

⭐️ A big thank you to our lovely clients for nominating us for the PetPlan Practice of the Year awards!

Working in veterinary practice certainly brings its challenges – there are emotional days, tough decisions and times when the job really stays with you. As a team, we genuinely care about the outcome of every patient we see. To have that care and commitment recognised, doesn’t go unappreciated by any of us.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank you all as clients for your continued support. It means a great deal that you choose to support us as an independent practice ⭐️

☀️ It’s due to be a HOT HOT weekend! ☀️
Hot weather can be dangerous for our pets. Dogs can’t cool off like humans do, making them especially vulnerable to heat stroke.

Prevent heat stroke by avoiding walks in peak heat, never leaving dogs in cars, and providing plenty of shade and water.

🕷️Tick season is well and truly here! 🕷️

Summer is prime time for ticks, and they can pose health risks to your pets if left on long enough!

✅ Check your pet daily, especially after walks in grassy or wooded areas.
✅ Use vet-approved tick prevention treatments.
✅ Don’t forget to inspect ears, between toes, and under collars!

If you find a tick, remove it carefully with a tick remover, try to avoid using fingers or tweezers as the head can get stuck! As always contact us if you’re unsure.

We’re pleased to share that we now have adder antivenom in stock.

Adders are the UK’s only native venomous snake and are most active on warm, sunny days—particularly in rural and upland areas like ours. Dogs are often bitten because they move more quickly and quietly than humans, giving an adder less time to move away. Bites typically occur on the legs, head, or neck when a dog accidentally steps on or sniffs an adder.

Treatment depends on the severity and location of the bite. Antivenom may be used alongside supportive care such as intravenous fluids and pain relief.

If you suspect an adder bite, call us immediately on 015395 32669.

Whether it’s in working hours or out of hours, our own in-house Emergency Team provide 24/7 emergency care for our registered patients—including evenings and weekends.
