Gut stasis, or GI Stasis, is a condition where a rabbitโs digestive system slows down or stops.
This is a really serious condition, and can be fatal if left untreated. Beatrix the bunny recently suffered from Gut Stasis, but luckily, thanks to her owner's quick thinking, she has made a full recovery:
๐ฐ How did you know that Beatrix was suffering from GI Stasis? ๐ฐ
We noticed Bea wasnโt eating like she normally does. Bea always comes out of her nap as soon as we sprinkle food onto a forage mat. So when she was nowhere to be seen, it rang alarm bells for us. Plus, her poos changed, becoming small and dark. Her behaviour also changed and she became really shy. These signs let us know that something really wasnโt right.
๐ฐ What did you do first? ๐ฐ
I rang the vet immediately and let them know that I had a rabbit in stasis that needed to be seen that day.
๐ฐ What happened when you took Beatrix to the vet? ๐ฐ
I took both Beatrix and our other bun Benji to the vets to help keep Bea calm. Our vet asked us some questions about the last time she ate, drank and went to the toilet, and about her general behaviour. They then listened to her gut and heart, felt her belly, and looked in her ears and mouth.
๐ฐ What was the outcome? ๐ฐ
Unfortunately Bea suffers from teeth spurs on her molars. These can rub on the inside of her mouth, meaning she doesnโt want to eat โ which then causes the GI Stasis. Bea was put under general anaesthetic due to the location of the spurs and they were trimmed down.
๐ฐ How is Beatrix now? ๐ฐ
Bea has made a full recovery, and is as happy and healthy as ever! Under the advice of our vet we are trying to slow down the regrowth of her spurs with lots of chew toys and unlimited fresh hay.
๐ฐ What advice would you give to owners? ๐ฐ
Learn everything you can about gut stasis, as well as other common rabbit illnesses. Because we knew the signs, we knew to get Beatrix seen as soon as possible, which undoubtedly helped her to recover quickly. Us bunny owners know our rabbits inside and out. As well as knowing the physical signs of the illness, we noticed behavioural changes in Bea, which was key to knowing that something wasnโt right.
