Post pictures of your dogs in the comments in a sit position!
馃惗Sit is usually the first obedience behaviour a puppy learns or the first thing we teach our puppies.
But why?
鉁咃笍It promotes calm.
鉁咃笍Helps impulse control.
鉁咃笍Can be used for polite greetings.
鉁咃笍Gives your dog something to do when we need them to wait eg at a road, front door or waiting for their food.
鉁咃笍More steady than standing.
Why have you taught your dog to sit鉂擄笍
Does your dog really know what the word Sit means?
Ok, they know what to do at home where you taught them, they've now learnt it in class.....but...
鉃★笍Will they Sit when asked in the park?
鉃★笍Will they Sit when asked whilst dogs are playing?
鉃★笍Will they Sit when asked mid playing?
鉃★笍Will they Sit when asked regardless of your body position?
鉃★笍Will they Sit when asked whatever you are doing, or at a distance or with your back turned??
鉃★笍Will they Sit first time straight away?
If your dog will only do this is certain situations and times, it hasn't been taught thoroughly.
When teaching new behaviours we have to ensure we generalise it so the cue word means the same thing in every situation/environment. We then proof this by adding in distractions and varying how we train.
As with all cue words we should only ask the dog once.
鈿狅笍By repeating commands we are not only ruining our training, we are teaching our dogs they don't have to listen to us and can ignore us.
鈿狅笍They learn they don't have to respond straight away which then the dog is labeled with being stubborn, naughty or not listening. When in fact it just hasn't be taught properly.
鈥硷笍Remember, training doesn't just stop in the home or in class鈥硷笍
