Remembrance Day has always been special to me and I have always been a part of the Remembrance Day parade in town in some way.

This year I couldn’t make the parade but I did my silence this morning and wanted to recognise the sacrifices that both humans and animals made during all of the wars!

The purple poppy represents the animals that in silence played their part, the mercy dogs that would take morphine to the wounded, the elephants and horses that were used for moving heavy artillery, the rats that were used in minefields as bomb detectors and the trench cats that were used to keep the rats at bay and for companionship- the part of history that no one speaks of.

The red poppy- each part having a a specific meaning that not many people know of. The red- for all of the blood shed during the conflicts, the black for the mourning of family and friends of those that paid the ultimate sacrifice, the green for the life that grew on the battlefield after the end of the wars and finally the leaf, that is meant to point to 11 o’clock to symbolise the hour that the conflicts stopped!

Lest we forget the sacrifices that were made to ensure we had the freedom and life which we each have today!

We will remember them!

🎆 Bonfire Night Tips for a Calm & Happy Pup 🐶 🎇

Fireworks might be fun for us — but they can be frightening for our furry friends! 💥

Here’s how to keep your dog safe and calm on Bonfire Night:

🐾 Create a safe space: Set up a cozy den with blankets, toys, and their favourite treats - the darker the better. Including something with your scent on it can provide added comfort through fireworks.

🎵 Block out the noise: Close windows, draw curtains, and play gentle music, white noise or the TV.

🦴 Stay calm yourself: Dogs pick up on our emotions — if you’re relaxed, they’ll feel more secure. Provide gentle reassurance without reinforcing the fearful and anxious behaviour.

💡 Walk early: Take them out before dark so they’re home before the fireworks begin. Tire them out as much as you can by letting them run around or play fetch.

🍖 Feed in plenty of time: Anxious dogs can refuse to eat or even bring their food back up if eating too closely to loud bangs.

🔒 Keep them indoors: Make sure doors and gates are secure — frightened dogs can bolt.

🧣Grab a scarf and make a half wrap for your dog (image and instructions posted yesterday as well as the final image on this post): this helps to comfort your dogs and can reduce anxiety.

Let’s make sure every furry friend is safe and as happy as can be this Bonfire Night 💖🐕

If anyone has any questions regarding any of the tips included- please pop me a message! I may not be available for walks and pop-ins however, your dogs comfort is still extremely important to me! ⁉️

Feel free to share and tag anyone you know that may have a dog that may benefit from these tips and tricks! Let’s keep bringing awareness to what we can do for our furry friends on a night that a lot of pet owners dread! 🤝🫶

I hope everyone has a lovely Bonfire Night and everyone stays safe! 🎆

A spooky Halloween walk with Enzo!

Not as many pictures and videos of my last two walks with Enzo sadly. One because it’s so difficult with my phone to get good pictures when it’s dark! But also because on Friday evening there were so many people dressed up! It was great to see all the kids dressed up in their costumes with some of the adults getting involved too. Some dogs can be a little more nervous around masks as the dogs struggle to figure out the person wearing the masks - so whenever walking a dog in the middle of trick or treating prime time, I like to focus more on the dogs behaviour and body language!

Enzo took it in his stride! He showed a little anxiousness with a few of the adults dressed up (I think I would be too if I didn’t know they were costumes!) Art the clown, Pennywise and Michael Myers were the full costume and masks that made Enzo a little weary but he took it like a champ! We got extremely wet and this poor boy needed a good towel drying when he got home but what a good boy he was!

A motorbike too… he didn’t care! He looked at it like it was nothing (usually he can react a little probably because of the noise) but absolutely did not phase him! Good boy Enzo and hopefully I will see you soon!🐶🐾💙

Bonfire Night Half Wrap for dogs scared of Fireworks!!

With the 5th just 2 days away and as many people with dogs will know, Bonfire night can be truly terrifying for dogs! This half wrap is designed to help comfort your dog!

Use a scarf or small blanket rolled up to create this little comforter.

I will be posting some of my best tips and tricks tomorrow for those who have dogs scared of fireworks as I am unavailable during bonfire night celebrations!

Follow along or visit my page tomorrow for more tips and how you can prepare for next year (I know we’re not past this year yet however desensitising dogs to the sounds of fireworks is a great way get them through the nights coming up. Desensitising is a long process and sadly doesn’t just happen over night!

Please keep an eye out for Milo towards Swinefleet and Goole Fields!

He is nervous so if you spot him, he may not approach you instead, with a high pitched voice run in the opposite direction if you have caught his attention! This is known as reversed chase and makes the dog think it is a game of them chasing you instead of you trying to get them!

Move slowly not to scare him further (but not too slowly that he can run off again) and please contact the number on the poster!

Please share and see if we can get little Milo back home especially with bonfire night coming up! I would be out searching if I could but sadly I’m at work!

Wishing everyone a spooky and fang-tastic day! 🎃

I know, I know — ‘Kara, we’ve not even got past Halloween yet and you’re already thinking about Christmas?!’

However… 🎄

Some of you may remember that this time last year, I organised a toy drive for the amazing children at Martin House Children’s Hospice through my role at Burgess Pet Care. Thanks to everyone’s kindness, it was a huge success — and I’m so excited to say that I’m doing it again this year! 💖

Before I start my new role working in a kennels, my final project is to make sure every child at Martin House receives a present from Santa at their annual Christmas celebration. 🎅

Martin House does incredible work supporting children with life-limiting illnesses and their families through unimaginably tough times. I’d love to help take away some of the financial pressure of Christmas so parents and carers can simply enjoy the holidays with their children. ✨

We’re accepting new and gently used toys (please ensure all parts and pieces are included) suitable for babies through to teenagers. If you, or someone you know, are having a pre-Christmas clear-out or would like to buy a small toy, your donation could make a huge difference. 💫

🎁 How to help:
• Collections are available in Goole and the surrounding areas
• Alternatively, please message me if you’d like to arrange a drop-off

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any support you’re able to offer. Your kindness truly helps bring a little extra magic to the children and families at Martin House this Christmas. ❤️

If you have any questions please feel free to message me!
