O my, that poor hedgehog 🦔🥹 what a will to survive🦔
NOW HERE’S ONE FOR YOU.
Lorraine, a friend and volunteer brought me a hedgehog a few evenings ago which was in a really sorry state.
It was a big female hedgehog whose spikes moved with thousands of fleas, maggots were dropping out of one of its ears, it was blind in both eyes, it’s back leg was broken and badly swollen and it was starving.
I gave it pain relief, killed all of the fleas and pulled all of the maggots out of its ear then put it’s completely limp body in a hutch knowing it could well be dead in the morning.
Next day, by some miracle, it was still alive but hadn’t eaten or drunk any water.
The following day was the same, it just stood there with its head down looking the picture of misery so I moved it to its water bowl where it stood making lapping movements but with its chin a quarter of an inch above the water so I filled a jar up with water, took hoggie out of her cage and fed her water with a syringe which she gulped down.
After I had finished cleaning the others out, I decided to give the poorly girl another couple of syringe fulls of water but when I put the syringe into her mouth I noticed something white in her throat so I took her down to the house, held her tightly under my arm and forced, yes forced her mouth open with a pair of closed scissors, ( you try even getting near a hedgehogs mouth, let alone opening it when it’s curled into a tight ball) and with the other hand tried several times to reach the object which I thought was a tooth until finally I moved the white thing. I then turned hoggie upside down so that she would not choke, gave her a gentle shake and look what fell out, a peanut.
No wonder this hedgehog was starving, it couldn’t eat or drink and on top of that, it had a broken leg, was blind and being eaten alive by fleas and maggots.
I fed her high protein through a syringe then the same at midnight.
The next day she looked a bit better but still hadn’t eaten so I went through the high protein treatment again, this I repeated the following day and wait for it, this morning her cage was wrecked and she had eaten all of her food.
I was thrilled to bits.
She knows that I’ve saved her because she doesn’t even put her prickles up when I pick her up.
Next step, the vets to check what can be done with her broken back leg.
This is the reward you get for loving animals and wanting to help them but then again, a lot of you already know that.
