Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Open Day at Ferguson Veterinary Clinic!

We were overwhelmed by the fantastic turnout. It was wonderful to welcome so many of our existing clients, as well as lots of new faces, and to have the opportunity to show you behind the scenes of our clinic.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing so many children enjoying themselves and showing interest in all things veterinary—especially dressing up in surgical gowns, caps and masks and imagining life as a veterinary surgeon!

We’ll be contacting the winners of our raffle very shortly.

Thank you once again to everyone who came along and supported our Open Day. A special shout out to the Guide Dog for the Blind Association and Heidi from SRUC Veterinary Nursing for giving up their time and attending. We raised a large sum of cash for our fantastic designated charity for the day - The Dog Aid society of Scotland

It was a pleasure to meet you all, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Ferguson Veterinary Clinic soon.

Meet the lovely Moses with our Lead General Practice nurse Nicole. Moses was referred for assessment of stomatitis. Although inflammation consistent with Feline Chronic Gingivo-Stomatitis was present it did not appear to affect his quality of life at present and Stomatitis Disease Activity Index score was relatively low. However, assessment under general anaesthesia revealed a fracture to the right upper maxillary canine which exposed the pulp (nerve). Because in cats the cusps of the canines are very thin and the pulp is very close, loss of even small portion of the tooth substance (often difficult to notice on conscious examination) may expose the pulp cavity. What is surprising is how well our patients mask evident tooth ache!

Exposed pulp typically dies within several weeks. While at this stage the tooth does become pain free, it also serves as an excellent reservoir for oral bacteria and a source of a chronic, low-grade inflammation and infection (periapical periodontitis and possible tooth root abscess development) - this is often asymptomatic. The goal of treatment is to remove the source of infection - either by extracting the tooth or carrying out root canal therapy.

Root canal therapy is essentially removal of the pulp with endodontic files and flushes and sterilising it. After that the canal is dried and filled with a mixture of rubber and cement. Access to the pulp is then closed with restorative materials (filling), to prevent bacteria re-enter the root canal and underlying bone. It is much less invasive compared to extraction and allows the patient to keep a functional tooth.

Piotr our Veterinary Referral Dentist majors in the treatment of all types of Dental conditions.
