Willow was in to see us this week and had the lovely Vet Matthew and RVN Marisa check her teeth and give her a bright smile after some dental work. 😁

By using dental x-rays, Matthew was able to see that she had some resorptive lesions (where the body breaks down the tooth from the root up). This would have been quite sore for her prior to getting seen to and without taking those x-rays we wouldn't be able to pinpoint the problem and correctly treat it.

Although she seemed bemused by us, we made sure she got plenty of cuddles and some tasty food after she fully recovered. She went home happy and healthy, which is what we love to see ❤️

📣📣We have some important news we would like to share with everyone;

As some of you may already know, after many years of dedicated service, Bill Wooton has decided to step back and enjoy a very well-deserved retirement. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill for his tireless commitment, his passion for veterinary medicine, and for building such a trusted and caring practice for our community.

We are delighted to let you know that Kingdom Veterinary Clinic will remain an independent practice. The same friendly team you know will continue to look after your pets with the highest standards of care.

Going forward, the practice will be led by Juan Barahona and Marcel Camps, two veterinary surgeons who share Bill’s values and commitment to both pets and their families. We are proud to continue his legacy and to ensure Kingdom Veterinary Clinic remains a place where your pets receive the best possible treatment, and where you always feel supported.

Please be reassured that nothing will change in the way you and your pets are cared for.

We are very excited about this new chapter and look forward to meeting many of you personally over the coming weeks.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our reception team and they will happily assist you.

The team would like to thank Bill for all his hard work over the years and wish him all the best in his retirement ❤️🐾

🐾 Help Your Pet Stay Calm During Fireworks 🎆

As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach, it’s a good time to start preparing your pets for fireworks.

💡 Here are some simple steps to help reduce their stress:

🎧 Start desensitisation early, play firework sounds at a low volume and gradually increase over time.

🌿 Try calming products, pheromone diffusers, supplements, or anxiety wraps can help pets who are mildly anxious.

🏡 Create a safe, quiet space, a cosy room or covered crate with soft blankets can muffle noise and make them feel secure.

💬 Speak to your vet, if your pet becomes very distressed, our team can advise on the best plan or medication options to keep them calm and safe.

✨ Preparation makes all the difference, start now to make fireworks season easier for you and your pet.

🧫 Why does the vet want to do cytology?

When your pet has ear or skin problems, the vet might recommend a cytology test to see what’s really going on under the microscope.

You might think…
🐶 “It’s probably the same infection as last time!”
👉 Not always!

Even if it looks similar, the cause can change, sometimes it’s bacteria, sometimes yeast, or even inflammation.

By checking a small swab sample, we can:
🔍 Find out what type of infection is present (bacteria, yeast, or both)
- Choose the right treatment from the start
- Help your pet feel better faster
- And avoid unnecessary antibiotics

📸 Below you can see a real ear swab slide, showing white blood cells and rod-shaped bacteria from a patient’s ear.
This quick test helps us treat the cause, not just the symptoms.

💚 Cytology: a simple test that makes a big difference!

🐾 What is Degenerative Joint Disease? 🐾

Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is a term used to cover arthritis or osteoarthritis in our patients. In these cases, the joint's cartilage deteriorates over time. Inflammation can occur and the body does its best to try and stabilize the joint by remolding the joint. However, the body does this by bone remolding which can cause bony spurs to form and cause more inflammation.

🐕‍🦺 What kind of patients will have this problem?

- Often seen in older obese patients
- Will affect dogs with Hip Dysplasia, Cruciate Ligament Injury and Elbow Dysplasia.
- Breeds such as Labradors, German Shepherds and Rottweilers are prone to this issue.
- Dogs who are over exercised with high impact activities as puppies eg. Excessive ball chasing.

Signs to watch out for:
1. Sleeping more.
2. Lameness.
3. Difficulty getting up or into the car.
4. Muscle wastage.
5. Not tolerating being touched in certain areas of the body.

🦴 How can we help?

If you are worried your pet has this issue, chat to your vet about the options available for your pet. Often it can be as simple as a lifestyle change such as swimming, better diet and joint supplements. Pain relief is often used in these cases. For those with a specific issue like cruciate ligament injury, surgery can be an option.
