I was in Ladybank today for a 1 to 1 training session and afterwards decided to take Toby and Otto for a walk around the park. I don't actually walk in public places very often anymore as most of our walks are at our field.
About 20 minutes into the walk, a Boxer spotted us and came running over from around 100 yards away from its owner. It wouldn't leave Otto alone and I eventually had to pick Otto up to keep him safe while we waited for the owner to get their dog back under control.
Thankfully everyone was okay, but it's a good reminder:
If your dog doesn't have a reliable recall, they shouldn't be off lead where they can run up to other dogs.
Your dog might be friendly, but the dog they're approaching might be nervous, elderly, injured, in training, reactive or simply not want another dog in their space.
Responsible off lead walking isn't just about whether your dog is friendly, it's about being able to call them away when needed. 🐶
