The University of Edinburgh Exmoor Pony Trekking is a student-run non-profit making organisation (all the money we make goes back into caring for the pon

ies, trek leaders are not paid). We cater for all levels of rider - whether you've never sat on a horse or whether you have ridden all your life, we guarantee you will have a fun time! The ponies are currently at Swanston farm, South Edinburgh. You can either drive or take the 15/4 midlothian bus from the city center. Find out more on how to get to us on our website. We offer 3 different types of treks:

Morning: 2-3 hour advanced/intermediate £35
Afternoon: 1-2 hour beginner/novice £25
Pootle: 30-45 minutes lead rein £15

If you would like to come out trekking more frequently we can offer you a membership costing £15, and this gives you £5 discount off every trek. Trek leaders are University of Edinburgh students who have taken a 1 year course to learn the ropes. They get taught first aid, pony first aid and how to take out a safe and enjoyable trek. If you are a student at the University of Edinburgh and would be interested in doing our Trek Leader Course please send us a message. A herd update ahead of moving to Glendevon on Friday! 🐴

Firstly, the lovely Dingane (pictured 1-3) who has been on loan to us since late 2023 has sadly returned to his owner earlier this year after some health challenges. We’re hoping that he might be able to rejoin us in the future but unfortunately he won’t be with us this summer.

Secondly, welcome to Manny, our new addition! He has made best friends with Maisie (in the zebra rug) already. He will be having a slow introduction to trekking life over the summer so keep an eye out for him! ☀️

We have some very sad news to share.

Unfortunately towards the end of last summer Pugwash started to develop rare abnormal shoulder movement.

Despite further veterinary investigation and professional rehabilitation efforts, at his latest vet recheck it was deemed that he would need regular intensive medical intervention in order to be comfortable in a field, with low chance of success. We made the difficult decision that this wouldn’t be right for him, and he was humanely euthanised yesterday. He went very peacefully with a mouthful of grass and a belly full of carrots.

Pugwash was an absolute character who really made an impression on the section and we will all miss him very much.

‼️EQUINE FLU‼️🤒

There has recently been a confirmed case of equine influenza in East Lothian ( )

💉 This is a very contagious disease that all our ponies are vaccinated against, however vaccinated ponies can still be affected, and it requires several weeks of isolation and recovery if contracted.

⛑️ To keep our herd happy and healthy we are asking all trekkers to please:
- avoid visiting any other horses or yards earlier in the same day as your trek
- make sure to clean/change clothes and any footwear/helmets before coming to see us

Thank you for your help!

✨Trek Leader Tuesday✨
Hi, My name is Marco and I’m final year Veterinary student with this being my fifth year in the section. I’m also the section’s President, leading the society’s strategy and trying to ensure its future (hence the photo of me failing to find a route in Glendevon). As much as I aim to be unbiased, my favourite pony at the moment is Professor since we had such a great time together last Summer
The section has been my favourite part of university, and it’ll be bittersweet when I graduate this July!

Recently the whole herd had their annual dental exams and treatment with Dick Vet Equine! Horse teeth continuously erupt throughout their lifetime and need rasping to prevent sharp points developing as well as identifying any issues such as cavities or diastemata (gaps between their teeth which food can become trapped in). This helps make sure they can eat and wear bridles comfortably.

They’re sedated to allow a thorough exam, and final year veterinary students complete them under careful supervision.
