The Strangles vaccine can be given alongside the flu and tetanus vaccines, or can be given separately. Boosters will be advised every 6-12 months, depending on the level of risk.

As a vet and MP, I’ve seen both sides of this issue.

The heartbreak for pet owners facing huge vet bills, and the pressure on vets doing their best within a broken system.

With the cost of living crisis, it can be a real shock for pet owners when they have to take a sick or injured animal, a member of their family, to the vet and face bigger bills than expected.

Veterinary care is already expensive — there’s no NHS for animals. That’s why I welcome the CMA inquiry into large veterinary businesses which can use their dominant position to raise prices while hiding behind individual vets.

This inquiry is vital to make sure the big providers are operating transparently with clear, accessible pricing information, and competing fairly with small independent practices that serve our communities.

I’ve long called for an update to the Veterinary Surgeons Act to help achieve this balance, protecting both pet owners and the independent vets who are being squeezed by corporate consolidation.

Individual vets don’t set the prices. So please, don’t take out frustration on the person in front of you who’s just trying to help your pet. It’s heart-breaking to hear of vets and vet nurses facing abuse from angry clients. The vast majority act ethically, work long hours, and always put animal welfare first.

And it’s devastating for vets too, especially when we have to euthanise animals that could have been treated had the owner had more financial resources. Those moments stay with us. We struggle with them long after the surgery lights go out.

Vets already experience mental health challenges at far higher rates than the general population. As we tackle unfair business practices, we must also support and respect the people who dedicate their lives to caring for our animals.
