Anything we can do to reduce risk is surely worth it! Laminate etc seems to be becoming more and more popular. Possibly due to it being easy clean which, as we know is fab when you have pets! Just a simple thing such as putting some rugs down and making walkways in the house that your dog can use CAN make a difference!
In our house we have tiled floors downstairs and we use rugs to make sure there is no slipping and sliding for Daisy! Feel free to share any more ideas to help keep these joints healthy! ๐ถ
Can we prevent arthritis...?
Sadly, probably not!
But we can certainly do our best to reduce the risk in dogs from a very early age.
Studies have shown that dogs kept on a floor covered with a slippery material while juvenile are 1.6 times more likely to develop hip dysplasia, compared with dogs kept on a non-slippery floor. (Van Hagen et al, 2005, for those who want to read more!). Over time, hip dysplasia can be a big factor in developing arthritis. ๐ฌ
That's right - simply stopping your dog from slipping and sliding on a low traction floors like tiles, laminate or wood can REDUCE THE RISK OF POOR JOINT DEVELOPMENT and therefore reduce the risk of painful arthritis in those joints when the dog is older.
More rugs = less drugs!
It's that simple!
