Cannae Canine Law: Microchip v Dog Tag

There’s a wee bit of confusion about this one, so let’s clear it up.

In Scotland, microchipping does NOT replace your dog’s ID tag.

🐶 By law, dogs over 8 weeks old must be microchipped and registered with the keeper’s current details.

🏷️ When your dog is in a public place, they must generally wear a collar with an identification tag showing the owner’s name and address, subject to certain legal exemptions.

📞 A telephone number on the tag is also a good idea, because if your dog gets lost, it can make contacting you much quicker.

And remember, your dog’s name isn't required on the tag. In fact, some dog welfare and rescue organisations recommend leaving the dog's name off, as it may make it easier for a stranger to gain the dog's trust.

So think of it this way:

Microchip = permanent identification

Dog tag = visible identification

You need both. One doesnae replace the other.

The Bone Episode
To give a bone or not to give a bone? 🦴

Every dog loves a good chew, but when it comes to giving your dog a bone, knowing the facts and keeping a watchful eye can mean the difference between a happy chewing session and a veterinary emergency.

Raw bones are fantastic for dogs when handled correctly. They provide incredible mental stimulation, satisfy a dog's natural predatory chewing instincts, and act as a natural toothbrush to help keep teeth and gums clean while strengthening jaw muscles. For powerful breeds like the Cane Corso, having a proper outlet for their natural drives is essential for mental well-being.

However, enthusiasm can quickly turn into danger if safety rules are ignored. Cooked bones are notoriously dangerous because they become brittle, splinter easily, and can cause severe internal lacerations or choking. Even with safe raw bones, swallowing a large fragment or allowing a dog to crunch down aggressively without boundaries can lead to intestinal blockages or broken teeth.

This is why SUPERVISION IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. Never hand your dog a bone and walk away. Active supervision allows you to monitor their chewing style, ensure they are gnawing rather than splintering or swallowing whole chunks, and calmly trade or remove the bone when it gets worn down to a risky size. Knowing how to trade safely with your dog is a fundamental leadership skill that every responsible owner should master.

Bungee leads are brilliant for the job they were designed for, like running or hiking wi' your dug.

But if I'm teaching loose lead walking? Nah. I want a clear line of communication, no a stretchy elastic band that changes the rules every time the dog pulls. The clearer the boundary, the easier it is for the dug to understand what I'm asking.

My ex said it was my own fault that Dexter broke my shoulder. He was a big dog, I needed 2 hands to pick up his big poo, I put my leash over my arm, and then Dexter did the zoomies thing everyone said it was my fault for treating him like a baby not a dog.

That's how I broke my shoulder and that's why I decided to learn more about training dogs.

But what are zoomies and why do dogs do them?

Why does my dog only get the zoomies around one particular person? 🤔

Most people think the zoomies are just a dog being happy, but that's not always the case.

Dogs can get the zoomies, also known as FRAPs (Frenetic Random Activity Periods), for lots of reasons:
● Excitement
● Releasing built-up energy
● Stress
● Frustration
● Feeling conflicted or overwhelmed

This morning, my dog did something really interesting.

She only reacts like this with some people. She crouches, pounces, then suddenly explodes into zoomies, pulling hard on the lead. She doesn't do it with everyone just some folk.

At first glance, it might look like she's desperate to say hello, but when you watch her body language, a different picture starts to appear.

She runs away... then comes back... then circles around on her long line. She doesn't really want to be touched, yet she's caught between curiosity and wanting to create distance.

This is called conflicted arousal. A dog can be excited and uncomfortable at the same time. They don't always know how to cope with those mixed emotions, so the energy bursts out as zoomies, spinning, pulling or frantic movement.

As owners, it's worth remembering that not every dog wants attention from every person, and that's okay. We should advocate for our dogs and respect what their body language is telling us.

The next time you see a dog doing zoomies, ask yourself:

Are they simply having fun... or are they trying to cope with overwhelming emotions?

Body language always tells the story if we take the time to watch.✌️ ❤️ 🐾

Do you walk your dog on a flexible leash? Here’s the thing folk usually miss. Dogs pull against pressure. The tighter the lead gets, the more opposition reflex kicks in. It turns into a wee tug-o-war nobody actually enjoys.

A flexible lead can be useful if ye use it as a training tool instead of a towing rope. It gives freedom, movement, and helps reduce constant tension. But freedom without guidance is just organised chaos in a plastic handle.

The real goal is teaching the dog that calm movement keeps the walk going. Loose lead lets your dog access to the world. Pulling creates pressure and frustration on daily the walks.

Ironically, one of the best ways to reduce lead pulling is structured off-leash freedom in safe areas. A dog that gets chances to sniff, explore, decompress, and move naturally is often far calmer back on lead. Constant restraint creates pressure-cooker dogs.

A lead should feel like a seatbelt, no a steering wheel. 🐕
