🌟 Super Sniffer Alert! 🌟 with K9 Scent & Search UK

We are over the moon to announce that Simba TJ has absolutely smashed his ORT test — earning his eligibility to move on to the next level in the National Nosework Association Entry Level! 🎉🐾

But what exactly is an ORT, you ask? 🤔

👉 ORT stands for Odour Recognition Test. Before a dog can officially enter a Nosework Trial, they must first pass this test to show they can confidently recognise a specific target odour (in this case, Gun Oil). The test involves a line-up of identical containers — only one contains the target odour. The dog’s job is to sniff them all and correctly indicate which one holds the scent.

💪 It’s not just a test of the nose, but also a test of focus, confidence, and communication between handler and dog!

✨ Why is Nosework so brilliant for dogs?
🐾 It taps into their natural instincts — sniffing is what dogs were born to do!
🐾 It builds confidence, especially in anxious or nervous dogs.
🐾 It strengthens the bond between dog and handler — learning to trust each other is a key part of the process.
🐾 It’s fun, enriching, and mentally stimulating — all things that help create a happy, well-balanced dog.

🐾 Where are we now?
Simba TJ is currently in Pre-Entry, and we’re still working hard to earn 2 badges in both Interior and Exterior searches — so please wish us luck! 🍀 His nose is ready, his tail is wagging, and we’re excited to see where this sniffing adventure takes us next!

We couldn’t be prouder of our clever boy Simba TJ, who’s showing the world what our Naughty Dogs can achieve when given the right emotional support and training! ❤️🐶

✨ Congratulations Simba TJ! ✨

🚀 Nosework Games at K9 Scent and Search – Playing 'BOOM'! 🎯🐾

This weekend K9 Scent & Search UK we played one of my favourite Nose work games—BOOM! 🔥 In this game, the number of treasures and their locations are unknown. If you or your dog pass an area without finding a treasure, you hear “BOOM”—a sign you missed something!

For me, this game was all about learning to trust Simba TJ’s tells. In one moment, we had just found a treasure and were entering a new area when Simba TJ showed interest in the leg of a whiteboard. His body became still, his tail lowered—a clear sign he was in odour. But then… he moved on. No hesitation. No lingering. My instinct was to second-guess: Does he need to go over it again? Did we miss something?

Then Simba TJ looked straight at me as if to say, Trust me, it’s not there. 💡 That was a breakthrough moment. Instead of questioning him, I backed his decision and moved on—and for once, I read him right! 🎉

Even my instructors were (for once 😆) impressed that I supported his call to dismiss the area as treasure-free. This game pushes us to fine-tune communication and deepen trust, and it’s incredible to experience those moments where it all clicks!

🐾 False Calls in Scent Training – Our Nose Work Games Adventure! 🐾 K9 Scent & Search UK

During our latest adventure at Nose Work Games Simba TJ and I hit a few bumps in the road… false calls! 😱 Oh no!

A false call happens when a dog gives all the right signals, but there isn’t actually a hide there. In this clip, you’ll see Simba TJ give me a false indication on a metal teapot. His usual cues—going still, nose indicating on the item, and his tail coming down—were all there, so I called it! But… no treasure. ❌

So why do false calls happen? 🤔
🔹 Residual Odor – If a hide was previously placed there, lingering scent could cause confusion.
🔹 Handler Influence – Sometimes, we unintentionally cue our dogs to indicate by body position, movement, or hesitation.
🔹 Dog's Confidence – If a dog thinks they should be finding something, they might overcommit to a guess.
🔹 Excitement & Pressure – Competition settings add excitement, and dogs may feel a little extra pressure to ‘perform.’

What do we need to work on? 🛠️
✔ Proofing against residual odor – Practicing with old hide locations to teach Simba TJ that past scents don’t count!
✔ Handler neutrality – Making sure I stay calm and neutral so I don’t accidentally influence his decision.
✔ Building clarity – Working more on rewarding only when I 100% know he’s found the real thing!

Even though we had some false calls, we still had so much fun, and every challenge is a learning opportunity. 💡 Training never stops, and we’ll be working hard to tighten up our skills for the next competition!

🌟 Simba TJ's Training Day at the Royal Engineers Museum! 🌟

Simba TJ and I had an amazing day at the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham, thanks to the fantastic event organised by K9 Scent and Search. 🐾✨ We had an incredible time exploring and searching around the tanks at this unique venue – what an experience! 🚜💨

However, our day did highlight an ongoing challenge... Simba TJ is still very reluctant to sniff independently. Instead of getting stuck into the search, he's walking alongside me and looking up, waiting for instructions. My instructor believes this is because Simba TJ thinks we're doing obedience training and is expecting cues rather than diving into the sniffing game himself. 🧐🐶

I’ll admit, it’s a bit frustrating—because there’s not much I can do but wait for him to grasp the sniffing game on his own! But I’m staying patient and positive. My instructor has given me some great advice on how to encourage more independent searching, and I’ll be sharing our progress in upcoming videos. 📹

In the meantime, we had an absolute blast sniffing around and soaking up the history of the museum. A huge thank you to K9 Scent and Search for organising such a brilliant day out! 👏

Watch this space for updates on our training journey... and if your dog struggles with independent sniffing too, you’re not alone! 🐕💙

🎥 New Video Alert: Simba TJ at Scent Training! 🐾👃

In this scene, you’ll see a moment where I made a not-so-great decision during a search. Simba TJ gave a head knock around a toy garage—a sign that the treasure was nearby—but he didn’t commit to the odour. Instead of turning right to give him another angle to work from, I turned left, taking him away from the source. Guess what? The treasure was in the garage! 🙈

Why do I share my missteps? Because I want you to learn from them! Training isn’t about being perfect—it’s about growing together with your dog. Watching my mistakes might just help you avoid making the same ones. So, let’s laugh at my silliness and celebrate Simba TJ’s hard work!

🐾 Watch the full clip and see what happens next.
💡 Have you made similar mistakes during training? Share your stories in the comments—I’d love to hear them!
