✨ Transformation Time ✨

This is my double factor violet hen – the first photo was taken when she was just 4 months old. Her colour back then was so dull and washed out, but look at her now! 💜 She’s grown into the most stunning deep violet, and I can’t get over how bright and beautiful her feathers are today.

It’s amazing to watch these changes as they mature, and it makes me so proud seeing how far she’s come. 🐦

🐥✨ Mystery Egg Alert! ✨🐥

You’ll never guess what happened in the aviary… We found a random egg on the floor, popped it into a nest box with one of our pairs, and it actually hatched! 🎉

But here’s the crazy part – the chick has red eyes! 👀 That means it’s either a German Fallow or a Dun Fallow (and definitely not Ino, as we do not have the Ino gene in our flock).

Such a special little surprise, and we can’t wait to see this baby grow and show off its colours. 🌈💛

🌿🦜 Big day for Rio! Yesterday he had his very first adventure outside on his harness. He loved soaking up the sunshine, listening to the birds and exploring all the new sights. It’s so special watching him experience the world safely by my side.

🚫🪶 Why Fibre Toys Can Be Dangerous for Budgies 🪶🚫

As much as our budgies love to chew and shred, not every toy on the market is safe. Toys made with fibres such as string, rope, or fluffy material might look fun, but they can actually pose a serious health risk.

👉 When a budgie chews on these toys, the fibres can easily fray. If swallowed, the strands can get tangled in the crop (the pouch in their throat where food is stored). Sadly, this can block the digestive system or even cause infection, and in severe cases, it may lead to a budgie passing away. 💔

⚠️ Things to avoid:

Cotton rope toys

Fluffy or fabric-based toys

Frayed threads hanging loose

✅ Safer alternatives:

Natural wood chews

Bird-safe cardboard shredders

Untreated leather strips

Palm leaf or seagrass toys

Keeping our feathered friends safe sometimes means avoiding toys that seem “fun” but can be deadly. Always check your budgie’s toys regularly for frays, loose threads, or wear.

✨ A happy budgie is a safe budgie – let’s keep playtime fun without the risk!

🪶 Why Calcium with D3 is a Must for Budgies – Especially Breeding Pairs 🪶

Calcium isn’t just important for strong bones – for budgies, it’s absolutely vital, especially if you’ve got a hen in breeding condition. 🐣💛

Here’s why it matters:
🪺 Egg Shell Strength – Without enough calcium, eggs can be thin-shelled or even soft, which is dangerous for both hen and chick.
💪 Healthy Muscles & Nerves – Calcium helps muscles (including the ones used to lay eggs!) work properly.
🌞 Why D3? – Even if your budgie is getting calcium, without vitamin D3 their body can’t absorb it properly. D3 helps the calcium actually get into the bones and eggshells where it’s needed most.

When breeding, calcium needs go through the roof. Hens are putting so much into eggs that without extra support, they can quickly become depleted – risking egg binding, poor health, and weak chicks.

⚠️ Important: Cuttlebone on its own isn’t enough to meet a breeding hen’s calcium needs. It’s great as part of the diet, but you’ll also need a proper supplement containing calcium and D3 to make sure your birds are getting what they truly need.

💡 Tip: Use a good quality calcium supplement with D3, alongside cuttlebone, and make sure it’s available all the time during breeding season.

Healthy hens = healthy eggs = healthy chicks 🐥💚

A Little Surprise in the Nest Box 🐣💛

Our two lovely budgies have been busy this season, with the hen laying 5 eggs. Sadly, one was eaten and the rest turned out to be infertile. We thought that would be the end of of this pairs egg news — until nature threw us a twist!

While cleaning up the aviary, we spotted a tiny egg on the floor. Carefully, we placed it under the hen, and to our delight… it’s fertile! 🌱✨ Now we’re keeping everything crossed that this little one makes it all the way.
We have absolutely no idea on what the mutation will be. Let's hope the embryo will grow to a healthy chick.

Budgies have a way of surprising us when we least expect it, and moments like these remind us how magical breeding season can be. 💛🐦

🟨 Budgerigar Debate: The Hidden Impact of Wing Clipping 🟨
Clipping a budgie's wings might seem like a harmless training aid — but the physical and emotional cost is often far greater than many realise. Let's explore what really happens when a bird is denied flight.

🧠 Psychological Effects:

🔹 Loss of confidence: Flight is a budgie’s natural defence and form of movement. When clipped, many birds become timid, anxious, or even fearful, especially when they cannot escape perceived threats.

🔹 Frustration & learned helplessness: A clipped bird that repeatedly tries to fly and fails may eventually stop trying altogether. This state — known as learned helplessness — can lead to depression, low energy, and withdrawal from interaction.

🔹 Behavioural issues: Wing-clipped birds are more likely to develop biting, screaming, or plucking behaviours, often as an outlet for frustration and lack of stimulation.

🦴 Muscular & Developmental Consequences:

🔸 Underdeveloped flight muscles: Birds build powerful chest and wing muscles through flight. Clipped birds often lack this development, leading to poor posture, weak perching ability, and reduced overall strength.

🔸 Impaired balance & coordination: Without regular flight practice, birds struggle with basic motor skills. Young birds especially may never develop proper flight technique, making it harder to fly confidently even after a full molt.

🔸 Harder crashes when startled: Contrary to popular belief, clipping doesn’t guarantee safety. Many clipped birds still attempt to fly — and fall hard. These falls can cause sprains, fractures, or even life-threatening injuries.

💬 Just because a bird can’t fly doesn’t mean it’s tame — it just means it has no choice. True taming comes from trust, patience, and allowing your budgie to express its natural behaviours.

✨ At Golden Wings Aviaries, we never clip wings. Our babies are raised with flight, early handling, and positive reinforcement — producing calm, confident companions with strong bodies and curious minds.
