SATURDAY 19/07/2025 - A CRY FOR HELP - RSPCA IOW APPEALS FOR PUBLIC SUPPORT AS DEMANDS SOAR

RSPCA Isle of Wight has issued a heartfelt appeal for urgent community support, as the charity faces growing pressure to meet the increasing demand for its services.

Dedicated to helping the Islandโ€™s most vulnerable animals, the independent branch is currently caring for a rising number of animals with complex needs, including strays, victims of neglect and cruelty, rescues from the illegal pet trade, and elderly pets requiring palliative care.

Many of these animals cannot be rehomed immediately due to ongoing legal proceedings, meaning the branch often provides months of food, shelter, rehabilitation and veterinary treatment โ€” a lifeline that comes at a significant cost.

โ€œIt costs ยฃ750,000 every year just to keep the centre running,โ€ said Steve Backhouse Branch Director.

โ€œOur medication and veterinary bills alone total around ยฃ76,000 annually, and as demand for our services increases, so does the strain on our resources.

"Many people are surprised to discover that while we are linked to the RSPCA nationally, less than 5% of our income comes from them.

"We rely heavily on donations from our local community to survive โ€” every pound makes a difference.โ€

As part of its latest appeal campaign, the RSPCA Isle of Wight is asking Islanders not to turn away from a picture of a dog being rescued from the illegal pet trade.

Instead, they are being asked to:

Donate whatever they can โ€” every gift stays on the Island
Share the appeal on social media to spread the word
Take part in or organise a local fundraiser
Join an event like the Spider Ride and Fire Walk Challenge

Says Steve:
โ€œEvery animal we help has a story, and often, a long road to recovery. With the communityโ€™s support, we can give each one a haven and a happy ending.โ€

This is so true โค

" I know this trainer openly uses shock collars, but this training video is so good, so what's the harm in sharing it?"

" I know this trainer is 'balanced' but they have such great content and clearly have extensive knowledge, so I will just share the content that doesn't involve aversives."

Is it ok to support aversive trainers because some of their content is good? No doubt, some aversive trainers are going to have extensive knowledge and they may be very charismatic and create amazing content but what is the danger of supporting their platforms?

Well, if we work with dogs professionally, we may know which advice to totally ignore but the public will not have the same discernment. When we support and share the content of aversive trainers, we give them a platform to reach more individuals that won't understand the difference between flooding and behaviour modification. And if we are recognised as an 'industry leader' in dog training, we may draw all our followers to these aversive trainers. In doing so, we condemn more dogs to training methods that are scientifically proven to be ineffective and unethical. Why would we want to do that?

Social media is filled with dog trainers who combine ethical practices with engaging content. By supporting their platforms, you help promote compassionate, science-based training and stand up for the welfare of dogs everywhere.- Holly Leake
