URGENT NOTICE FROM SOUTHERN WATER. We are very sorry to say that, earlier this morning, our wastewater pumping station at Madeira Road, Totland, failed, resulting in a discharge of screened wastewater into the bathing water.
The spill occurred from 4:08am to 5:58am. We have notified the Environment Agency, and a team from Adler and Allan is on the way to the site to begin water sampling. Our own operators are also walking the beach to assess the extent of any pollution.
We have produced tidal modelling of the spill, included below, which shows the concentration of the wastewater and the likely pattern the wastewater will follow.
While we work urgently to understand why the pumping station failed, the Madeira Road site will be manually operated to help ensure there are no further failures.
We fully recognise how important this area is to residents, visitors and local businesses, and we understand the concern and disruption that an incident like this may cause.
We sincerely apologise to everyone affected. We are committed to working closely with all parties during the clean-up and recovery, and to doing everything we can to help return the area to normal as quickly as possible.
Southern Water will provide a further update early this afternoon and when received we will share further information.
