๐Ÿพ Meet John โ€“ Assistant Trainer at Curious Canine ๐Ÿพ

Johnโ€™s journey to becoming part of Curious Canine has been anything but ordinary.
He joined the army at a young age, earning a place in an elite unit where endurance, resilience, and discipline were key. Over the years he gained qualifications in navigation, mountain leadership, and advanced emergency first aid, alongside specialist military training. Even after leaving the regular army for a successful career in IT, the pull of the outdoors โ€” and the camaraderie of service โ€” drew him back into the reserves.

It was after meeting Karyn that Johnโ€™s passion for dogs truly took off. His natural talent and calm, intuitive approach with dogs made learning come easily, and before long he found a new way to combine his love for the mountains, fitness, and dogs โ€” through canicross and canitrail.

John raced alongside Arnhem until his retirement, and now competes with Atlas, taking on distances from 5km to an incredible 80km โ€” even earning wins in some of the longer events. His commitment extends beyond racing; heโ€™s actively involved in the dogsโ€™ physio routines and has achieved a Trick Dog qualification with Arnhem.

At Curious Canine, John supports behaviour consultations, particularly with nervous or sensitive dogs, where his calm presence and quiet confidence make all the difference.

Looking ahead, John plans to combine his outdoor expertise with his love for dogs by leading mountain and navigation training โ€” helping others explore and enjoy the outdoors safely and confidently alongside their canine companions.

๐Ÿ’› Weโ€™re thrilled to have John as part of the Curious Canine team โ€” bringing together discipline, adventure, and heart in everything he does.

I am working on Atlas deciding a direction for tracking, and engaging 'active disobedience' by sticking by that decision and pulling, regardless of what I'm doing with my lead.

So one of our early steps is to encourage the pull, and be rewarded for it (we will build in multiple other layers and factors in the ultimate process).

We are certainly getting a stronger pull already ๐Ÿ’ช but I am also seeing early signs of line tension becoming part of his picture (second video, no tension, less committed indication), so its a good reminder ro balance my training plan.

Huge thanks for the excellent track laying and buddying - can't do it without my fellow trainers!

Proud moment at CC HQ as John has just completed the arduous Warrior Challenge / ๐Ÿ…

This was a 110km race, split over 2 days in the Moroccan desert. I can quote John that day one was 'as hard as a bag of hard things'.
But knowing he has so much support from you all and a promise he made to his friend Dave, he dug deep and finished with a smile on his face. And of course, no run would be complete without a dog, so a stray decided to accompany John on the trails ๐Ÿ•

Thank you to everyone who has supported John, and special thanks to The Ginger Ninja for being his coach and training partner.

Arnhem & Atlas will both be wearing their purple poppies with pride this week, along with the rest of the Curious Canine Team.

Atlas was named after the A400M Atlas aircraft that carries paratroopers.
He serves his own modern-day purpose as a Lost Dog Tracking dog โ€” using his nose and his training to find missing dogs, bringing families answers, hope, and closure.

Arnhem was named after the Battle of Arnhem โ€” a place of unbelievable bravery and loss.
Although he is now retired, he earned every bit of his place in that long chain of working dogs.

The purple poppy honours the animals who served alongside humans in conflict โ€” including the military working dogs who scouted, patrolled, detected explosives, carried messages, pulled stretchers, protected their people and stood in danger without hesitation.

John served over 30 years in the military โ€” so remembrance is personal.
Karyn has spent over 20 years working with working dogs โ€” so this connection runs deep.

Atlas & Arnhem will represent those dogs with respect on Remembrance Sunday โ€” one still working, one now retired โ€” both part of that same legacy.
