Seeing lots of people shocked by the news at Hoads farm and looking to find alternatives to supermarket eggs, so I thought I’d compile a list.
Firstly, if you’re going to buy eggs, I’d suggest only getting organic or biodynamic eggs as they have a much higher welfare standard.
If you buy them outside of the big supermarkets organic aren’t even more expensive. The ones pictured are from HISBE Food and are actually 5p cheaper than Hoads were in the main supermarkets. The big chains are ripping you off people!
Alternatively you can also get higher welfare and local eggs from..
Archers butcher
The Mighty Seed Cafe
Hilly Laine
Wastenot
Infinity Foods Co-operative Ltd
The Macs Farm
Grocer and Grain
Health Rebels Store
Wild Cherry
The Sussex Peasant
Arguably there is no such thing as ethical egg consumption due to the controversial practice of killing male chicks at birth and the fact that virtually all chickens only live out a fraction of their life span.
If you really want to avoid any possible exploitation of chickens then you can use soaked chia or flax seeds as an alternative in many baking recipes.
Finally Fu Fighters make an amazing chickpea tofu which is great scrambled on toast!
